POW Updates ‘Hot Planet/Cool Athletes’ In Collaboration With The North Face

Following a strong showing of its members last month in Washington, D.C. to petition the dangers of climate change to a multi-billion dollar snow industry, Protect Our Winters has re-launched a newly crafted Hot Planet/Cool Athletes program in collaboration with The North Face, to be presented to more than 20,000 students nationwide by POW’s roster of professional riders.
PRESS RELEASE – PACIFIC PALISADES, CA – November 5, 2013, While the new International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report confirmed recently that climate change is indisputable, it’s something that the winter sports community has been seeing first-hand for years. Protect Our Winters re-launched their “Hot Planet/Cool Athletes” program this week to take that first hand perspective into the classroom to explain climate change from an engaging new perspective and to inspire and empower students to become involved.
Presented by The North Face, and in association with Clif Bar, Mountain Equipment Co-Op and Teton Gravity Research, the Hot Planet /Cool Athletes program has been presented to more than 20,000 students at 41 schools nationwide since 2011. The new format for 2013 continues to educate students about climate change, combining engaging action sports footage and understandable climate science with first hand athlete’s perspectives and a call to action that truly breaks through to students and gives them the tools to be part of the solution.
Pro athletes such as Gretchen Bleiler, Jeremy Jones, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Ingrid Backstrom, Lucas Debari, Danny Davis and Angel Collinson are featured in the 25-minute video, with many others scheduled for in-person school appearances.
“Young people have the most to gain and the most to lose, by taking care of this earth and solving climate change right now,” The North Face Skier and POW advocate Sage Cattabriga-Alosa said. “They should be empowered to take care of their environment and see that they can actually influence adults, their parents, and the people around them.”
The program kicked off this school semester and will continue throughout the school year in places such as Vancouver BC, Seattle, Santa Barbara, Burlington, Boise, Salt Lake City, Denver and many others. To book a school assembly, please contact POW at: info@protectourwinters.org
An Urgent Call to Action: #ourtimeisnow
To take this educational platform to the next level, POW is launching the #ourtimeisnow campaign, an urgent call to action that invites students to become “POW Student Climate Leaders”, empowering them to take meaningful action. By connecting with them in a relevant way, via their social media, POW will invite all students to use the hashtag #ourtimeisnow across their social media channels. POW can then track its use and provide meaningful climate actions directly back to each student. As students become more involved in the campaign by using the hashtag on Twitter and Instagram, they will have opportunities to win great prizes from brands like The North Face and Clif Bar and the chance to spend time with professional athletes discussing climate change or joining POW representatives on Capitol Hill.
“We’ve got to create a social movement starting with young kids who will be the most affected, and we feel that this component of the program is a critical step in making a difference. By using social media as a backbone for it, we’re connecting with students on their terms and starting that movement with meaningful results,” said POW’s Executive Director, Chris Steinkamp
The new program also provides benefits to the students and their schools. The Shane McConkey Foundation is inviting student teams that host a Hot Planet / Cool Athletes assembly this fall to compete against each other by submitting cutting carbon ideas for their schools, for a chance to win $10,000 in total prize money to be awarded on Earth Day, 2014.
Protect Our Winters (POW) is the environmental center point of the winter sports community, united together towards a common goal of reducing climate change’s effects on our sport and mountain economies. Founded in 2007, POW re-invests contributions in educational initiatives, advocacy and supporting community-based initiatives. For more information, visit http://www.protectourwinters.org.

Patagonia Restructures under “Patagonia Works” To Launch Internal Fund and Invest in Environmentally Sound Start-Ups

Patagonia has long been committed to upholding and promoting environmentally sound business practices. In order to move forward in alignment with these goals the company has decided to reorganize itself under a new holding company, “Patagonia Works”. This new structuring will allow the company to launch an internal fund, “$20 Million and Change”, which will give the brand opportunities to invest in start-up companies that lie beyond their current realm of outdoor clothing.

Press Release:
PATAGONIA LAUNCHES “$20 MILLION and CHANGE” AND PATAGONIA WORKS – A HOLDING COMPANY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Letter from Patagonia Works founder, Yvon Chouinard, announces the launch of an internal fund to help responsiblestart-up companies; reorganizes Patagonia into a new kind of holding company.
VENTURA, California (May 6, 2013)
I don’t like to think of myself as a businessman. I’ve made no secret that I hold a fairly skeptical view of the business world. That said, Patagonia, the company my wife and I founded four decades ago, has grown up to be — by global standards — a medium-size business. And that bestows on our family a serious responsibility. The last line of Patagonia’s mission statement is “… use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” We’ve always taken that seriously.
Three examples: Every year for 30 years, Patagonia has donated one percent of its sales to grassroots environmental organizations. We helped initiate the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, an organization of companies that produces more than a third of the clothing and footwear on the planet. In a very short time, the Coalition has launched an index of social and environmental performance that designers (and eventually consumers) can use to make better decisions when developing products or choosing materials. And last year we became one of California’s first B Corps (benefit corporations), which means that the values that helped make our company successful are now etched into our legal charter.
Now is the time for Patagonia to take the next logical step: to reach out beyond the framework of the apparel and outdoor industries. Today, my family and I are happy to launch $20 Million and Change, an internal fund to help like-minded, responsible start-up companies bring about positive benefit to the environment.
With the launch of this fund, we have reorganized Patagonia and our other businesses within a new holding company called Patagonia Works. While most holding companies are about diversification, Patagonia Works is dedicated to a single cause: using business to help solve the environmental crisis. Rose Marcario, who has been COO and CFO of Patagonia’s apparel company, will now take on a new role as President and CEO of Patagonia Works. Rose has been instrumental in tripling profits for our company. We now want to apply her business acumen and keen sense of social and environmental responsibility to new companies in five critical areas: clothing, yes, but also food, water, energy and waste. Rose has been responsible for the launch of Patagonia Provisions, which will soon expand beyond our Wild Salmon Jerky (wild-caught in natal waters by First Nations tribes) to other foods that, like our jerky, are more thoughtfully sourced. The food business is, as much as the apparel or energy industries, environmentally broken. It takes more from the planet than it gives back. We aim to find ways to get what we want to eat by working with nature rather than against it.
Casey Sheahan will continue to serve as President and CEO of Patagonia, Inc., the clothing company at the heart of Patagonia Works.
Others might see Patagonia Works and $20 Million and Change as revolutionary business ventures; we think both are just next logical steps to doing business more responsibly. Economic growth for the past two centuries has been tied to an ever-spiraling carbon bonfire. Business – and human – success in the next 100 years will have to come from working with nature rather than using it up. That is a necessity, not a luxury as it’s seen now in most business quarters. We invite and encourage all companies to start to work with us in that direction.
To apply for funding or seek information regarding the $20 Million and Change program, please email:info@patagoniaworks.com or call (805) 667-2300.

Lazer Sport X Protect Our Winters collab for climate awareness and a new line of helmets

Lazer Sport and Protect Our Winters have teamed up to launch a new line of snowsports helmets. The new partnership will focus on creating programs that engage the wintersports community in the fight against climate change, pledging 1% of all revenues to environmental groups like POW.
“When we committed to 1% for the Planet, there was no other non-profit we considered supporting. What Jeremy Jones, and POW have done is incredible. It is grassroots, yet powerful and authentic to who we want to be, and who we want to partner with,” commented Lazer snow CEO Peter Steenwegen.
Read on for more details on this collaboration:
Even though Lazer snow helmets are not yet available to consumers, Lazer is starting its support for POW from day one of the new products, and in conjunction with the launch of the entire snow helmet collection at the Snowsports Industries of America SnowShow in Denver. “Even though we are a new brand in the snowsport business, we feel it is important to take a leadership role within the industry, and this is one of our actions” states Hans Dyhrman, Director of Marketing for Lazer Snow.  According to POW Executive Director, Chris Steinkamp, “we’re really excited that Lazer Sport has decided to support POW this year and we’re looking forward to work  with them as they build their global snow brand, developing a partnership that uses our collective reach to build awareness and take action against climate change.”  Over the next year, both companies will be coordinating to further the POW message, while also creating meaningful steps to lower our carbon footprints.

Volcom Give Back Series Supports: TACA

By Derek Sabori
In 2011, our Give Back Series has been going strong. If you’re a follower of the New Future Blog, then you’re aware of our V.Co-logical Series, where we donate 1% of those sales to environmentally focused non-profits across the globe through our 1% for the Planet membership. The Give Back Series is a little different…it’s people-focused.
Whenever you buy Give Back Series Product, you’re helping us support non-profit organizations that we have partnered up with each season. These are organizations that are doing amazing things in the community and while you may or may not be benefiting from the work they are doing, I can assure you, they are doing very positive, and life changing work.
For Spring 2011, we are proud to support Talk About Curing Autism (TACA), a national non-profit organization that provides support and resources to over 20,000 families across the United States.
Now mind you, this is our 2nd time teaming up with TACA for our Give Back Series – in fact, they were one of our first, significant programs that proved to be very successful. Being new to the job and all, I felt like I needed to dig a little deeper. So a little over a month ago, I went into the TACA offices to meet with the founder Lisa Ackerman and the new CEO Janine Ingram. I wanted to learn more about an organization that I had heard so much about, and I wanted to get some insight and material for the New Future blog…Here’s what I learned:
TACA is in its 11th year now, and their staff is up to 14 full timers with an army of about 300 volunteers (many dedicating 20+ hours a week!). Research is showing that approximately 1 in 91 kids are affected by autism and TACA’s mission – in a nutshell – is to provide real help now. Officially, Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to educating, empowering and supporting families affected by autism. For families who have just received the autism diagnosis, TACA aims to speed up the cycle time from the autism diagnosis to effective treatments. TACA helps to strengthen the autism community by connecting families and the professionals who can help them, allowing them to share stories and information to help improve the quality of life for people with autism. You can visit their website atwww.tacanow.org.

When you hear the stories of the families that have been affected by this devastating neurological and biological disorder and the stories of how TACA has helped, you can’t help but be moved to support them.
Lisa and Janine are two women completely committed and passionate about helping families. It’s so inspiring to hear their stories and to see the fire in their eyes as they speak about the work they are doing. I left that meeting fully energized.
Now it’s your turn…check out the tees we’re offering in support of TACA and if you’re digging them, head to your local retailer or go to volcom.com to support an organization that is truly making a difference in this world.
Check back often because April is Autism Awareness month and there are events that we’ll be telling you about soon…In the meanwhile, take a moment to meet Lisa and Janine here - http://vimeo.com/20903650.

1% For The Planet 2010 Donations Up 40%

1% for the Planet, an organization created by Patagonia CEO Yvon Chouinard, increased its environmental donations by 40% in 2010, and has added at least one company per day to its network over the past three years.  The organization consists of companies throughout 43 countries that give at least 1% of their revenue to environmental causes:
The organization in a statement noted that the recession has meant sharp cutbacks in American philanthropy, with donations to the nation’s largest nonprofit groups dropping 11% and giving by the largest corporations down 7.5% last year, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy. But one group of donors is bucking the trend: the 1,380 companies who are members of 1% for the Planet.

“I never thought we’d have more than 1,000 members,” says Yvon Chouinard, CEO of Patagonia, who created 1% with his fishing buddy, Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, Montana. “Now it’s clear to me that we’ve started a revolution that’s only just begun.”
In less than a decade, 1% for the Planet has emerged as one of the leading channels of funding for environmental work in the world. Since 1%’s launch in 2002, its members have given more than $70 million to nonprofit groups of the members’ choice focused in sustainability, from large international organizations to local community groups. More than 2300 non-profit organizations have been qualified by 1% for the Planet to receive funding from 1% member companies.
1% member companies are cutting new ground in the business community. Only 4% of the philanthropy in the United States comes from the business community, and that giving is highly dependent on economic conditions. Yet 1% member companies commit to give 1% of their revenues every year, a high bar for any business to reach.
“There’s a big difference between giving a percentage of your profits and giving a percentage of total revenue,” says Chouinard. “One is a charitable gesture; the other shows that environmental values are at the heart of a company’s business plan.”
So why do companies make the 1% commitment? Terry Kellogg, CEO of 1% for the Planet, explains. “Companies see many benefits from environmental giving. They’re using 1% to clearly differentiate themselves from competitors. They’re forging strategic partnerships with recipients. And they’re aligning themselves with the values of their customers.”
“Nowadays consumers want to know that companies they are supporting with their dollars are making a positive impact on the world,” says Jennifer Orgolini, Director of Sustainability at New Belgium Brewing. “When our customers see that we are a member of 1% for the Planet, they quickly understand we care about the communities where we sell our beer.”
For New Belgium, community includes every state in the Colorado River basin, from its origin not far from the brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, to its terminus near the Mexican border. In 2010, New Belgium created the Save the Colorado River Campaign. In its first year, the campaign fund handed out $150,000 in grants to environmental organizations working in the basin, from the Grand Canyon Institute, which is working to protect wildlife habitat, to the San Diego Coastkeeper, which is advocating for reuse of treated wastewater.
“For us as a business, one of the best things about joining 1% is that they pushed us to take a wide-lens view of the many ways we can support environmental work,” says Orgolini. “In addition to donating $1 for every barrel of beer we sell, we also provide free beer for organizations’ fundraisers and other events. 1% has helped us see all the different ways we can make a difference.”
Center for Whole Communities, a land-based leadership development organization based in Fayston, VT, has received significant funding from 1% member companies. Ginny McGinn, Co-Director of the Center for Whole Communities, says, “Foundation resources for the critically important work of building the capacity of environmental nonprofit leaders across the country have been significantly impacted by the downturn in the economy. The folks at 1% inspired visionary corporate giving that allowed us (Center for Whole Communities) to increase access to our programs for 2011. 1% for the Planet’s model is a game changer for the nonprofits working to improve the health of the planet - and the health of our communities.”
