Bond Outerwear - Recycled PET & Carbon Neutral

If you aren't familiar with Bond Outerwear you should visit their site and check out their products as they are one of the most progressive if not the most progressive snowboard outerwear companies in terms of sustainability. All of their outer shells and inner liners utilize a blend of recycled PET (made from plastic bottles and containers), and virgin polyester that is completely recyclable. Both are materials that have been used before and can be used again for years to come. All snaps, zipper pulls, and buttons are made from discarded plastic pellets from heavy industry. Bond offsets all their carbon usage for everything from their office power to shipping through Carbonfund.org, and ship directly from their suppliers to their retailers which reduces and saves on fuel usage and unnecessary packaging waste. Bond holds their entire collection to high standards and work everyday to find new ways to innovate and make the most environmentally considered snowboard outerwear on the market.

Planet Earth Clothing

Planet Earth Clothing Co. is dedicated to striving for sustainability by shedding old habits and adopting new methods. Don’t look to them for the tallest tees, or brightest toxic hoodies, they're just building the stuff they're proud to wear.  Oh...and they just turned 21! Bought their first beer legally, chugged it, and then recycled it.  Cheers.

Learning how to be greener is like learning new tricks.

It always looks easier, takes longer, and hurts more, and when you finally stick it, the satisfaction fuels your commitment to step up to the next one. This describes the past 21 years for us in the streets and the office, and the reason we’ve got the most complete year round, top to bottom, eco-sensitive product line in action sports today. Here are some of the best tricks in our bag to date.

ORGANIC COTTON

Our cotton products are made from a blend of virgin and certified organic cotton

Just because cotton grows naturally on a plant, doesn’t mean it’s grown naturally. $2 billion USD worth of chemicals are sprayed on the world’s cotton crop every year, half of which is considered toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organization. These chemicals pollute the soil, air, animals, farmers and us all. With only 0.15% of the world’s cotton today guaranteed to be pesticide free, it’s up to us all to continually raise awareness, and increase demand for organic cotton so that it can someday become the standard, instead of the anomaly.

RECYCLED PET

Our polyester fabrics are made from a blend of virgin and recycled PET

Polyethylene Terephthatlate (PET) is the stuff plastic drink bottles & food jars, and other things, are made of, yet only 30% are being recycled leaving the millions of tons a year dumped back into our environment. The best way to increase recycling is to increase the number of ways to use it. At the top of the list is clothing and carpet, accounting for 54% of post recycled PET use. So the next time you wear one of our jackets, feel good knowing you also created one more place for those recycled bottles to go.

NON-TOXIC INKS & DYES

Our inks and fabric dyes are non-toxic

Traditional pastisol printing inks used to create bold and vivid colors contain heavy metals, toxic solvents and even formaldehyde which was recently determined to be a cancer-causing substance. We use water-based inks and dyes and the most up-to-date bio-based plasticizer technology earning it a classification as 100% non-toxic. Our fabric colors and prints are just as durable, stay true to their original color and guarantee our garments as easy on the environment as they are on your body.

RECYCLED & RECYLABLE
POLY BAGS

Our products are packed in 100% recycled poly bags that are also recyclable

More than four TRILLION Polyethylene plastic bags are manufactured each year. It takes 1,000 years for them to break down during which time toxic substances leach into the soil and the food chain. Each year approximately 1 BILLION sea birds and mammals die eating them. So unlike the thousands of other bags you’ve been forced to throw into the environment over your lifetime, go ahead and throw these into the recycling bin and they might become your next jacket.

Burton Launches “The Great Outfitter”

Burton Snowboards has launched “The Great Outfitter,” an online tool designed to allow riders to virtually create and view their dream outerwear setup for the season.

Riders can put together and view as many pant and jacket combinations as they can think of by selecting different colors, fits, and weather conditions. Users can also find some inspiration from the Great Outfitter’s Gallery, which features outerwear worn by Burton pros and setups chosen by Burton staff. The site features local shops so as to help users find their gear nearby.

Besides the Great Outfitter’s Gallery, there is also “The Gallery,” which allows users to share their creations on Facebook.

In the “Field Observations” section, riders can learn about the “Five Things to Never Wear” and other words of wisdom from snowboarding etiquette to dealing with mountain bullies. When riders have their own pieces of advice, they can post messages on Twitter using the hashtag #BurtonOps.

Look for Burton’s Green Mountain Project (GMP) jackets and pants featuring eco-friendly and recycled materials used wherever possible.

Try it out at burton.com/outfitter.

New Bond Outerwear Site Launching Soon

Bond Outerwear a company we blogged about a number of times has a new website dropping very soon with a bunch of sick sustainable outerwear for the upcoming season!

All of Bond's outer shells and inner lining utilize a blend of recycled PET and virgin polyester that is completely recyclable.

All snaps, zippers, and buttons are made from pre consumer waste.

Some of their jacket's inner linings are made from discarded coconut shells blended into a little bit of polyester providing a very active level of evaporative cooling and odor resistance which leads to very functional lining dubbed the Coconut Grove Wicking System.

Pyua - German Outdoor Clothing Company

Pyua is a German outdoor clothing company, who were Finalists in the ISPO Brandnew Awards in 2009. This year they've managed to score a ISPO Eco Responsibility Award in the Textile category for their Climate 2L Padded Jacket and Pants.

The judges liked that these freeride ski garments was made waterproof, by virtue of a Sympatex membrane, which unlike the ePTFE (teflon) substrates used by eVent and Gore-Tex can be easily recycled. Additionally Pyua had selected a recycled polyester face fabric and lining material for the Climate jacket. The materials selected also mean that, like Pyua's other outdoor clothing, the shell can itself be readily recycled at the conclusion of its useful life.

Although the Climate jacket not yet available at retail, Pyua small range of current skiwear tops and pants provide similar in-use functionality and end-of-life product stewardship. Except, instead of using Sympatex, these styles are crafted with Teijin's EcoStorm.

Eco Storm is waterproof and breathable film described by its Japanese makers as using recycled fibres, being recyclable through their Eco Circle system, and avoiding the use of solvents during production of the film, with few toxic gases released when burnt. Yet they say it achieves a waterproofness that labs test out at 20,000mm of hydrostatic resistance. With a breathability in the range of 5,0000g/m2 to 15,000g/m2 of moisture permeability per 24 hours.

Eco Circle is the same recycling system used by the likes of Patagonia and Nau. It is said to reduce energy use by an estimated 84% and carbon dioxide emissions by 77%.

As a new company in the outdoor arena, it's great to see Pyua taking such a strong line of environmental responsibility from the outset. Most of their website is understandably in German. But strangely their online store is also available in English.

Check them out at pyua.de!
