PHOTO: Courtesy of USGS</em></div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">Patagonia announced February 7 they will no longer attend Outdoor Retailer, one of the United States’ biggest outdoor industry trade shows that takes place in Salt Lake City bi-annually. The announcement comes in response to Utah Governor Gary Herbert’s decision to rescind protection of Bears Ears National Monument, 1.35 million acres of public land located at the south eastern tip of Utah that was established by President Obama in his final days as president.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">Outdoor Retailer’s event organizers, Outdoor Industry Association, made their own announcement on February 6 not to renew their contract ending summer 2018. Show director Marissa Nicholson said the decision is based on the city’s inability to accommodate the show’s growing numbers, as well as the public land issues occurring in the state. The show is proactively looking for a new host location after calling Salt Lake City home since 1996 and bringing around $45 million to the state annually, according to economy reports from the OIA. More than 20,000 attendees come to the event in the winter, with 30,000 attending the summer event.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">According to Ski Utah, skiing contributes $1.3 billion to Utah’s economy and creates nearly 20,000 seasonal jobs, yet president and CEO of Visit Salt Lake Scott Beck does not think Outdoor Retailer’s potential withdraw from Utah will have an impact on the ski industry.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">“The ski industry is a shining example of positive stewardship of public lands, and not mired in this conflict at all,” says Beck. While Beck believes the short-term impact will not directly affect the ski industry or even the outdoor industry as a whole, he feels it could hypothetically impact future decisions of outdoor industry companies relocating to Utah.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">“If the withdrawal of Patagonia does not affect change in the governor’s, our legislature’s, or our federal delegation’s perspective on public lands, and therefore causes the show owners to choose a new location in the future, the impact will be significant,” Beck added.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">Connie Marshall, director of marketing at Alta, says she does not anticipate any significant effects on the ski industry. Though smaller resorts are watching the issue closely out of concern it could impact people’s decisions on where to take their ski vacations.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">“Losing Patagonia is one thing, but if we lose the whole show that’s another issue,” says Brighton’s marketing director Jared Winkler. “People do plan ski vacations before and after the winter show—to lose those skier visits would be disappointing.”</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">While the uncertainty of Bears Ears National Monument looms, Roberts is stressing the importance of uniting as an industry.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">“The importance of public lands is the infrastructure that makes our industry,” she said. “Making your voice heard, whether it’s in Washington or at a local level is the most impactful thing you can do. We need to be unified to be successful.”</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">Patagonia, a forerunner for environmentally conscious and socially responsible business practices, had expressed concerns on the issue in open letter written last month by Yvon Chouinard, the company’s founder and staunch environmentalist.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">“Every year, outdoor recreation in Utah drives $12 million in consumer spending and supports 122,000 jobs across the state…access to the outdoors is the reason why so many of my friends consider Utah the ultimate place to live,” wrote Chouinard. “If Governor Herbert doesn’t need us, then we can find a more welcoming home.”</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">Utah-based Black Diamond founder Peter Metcalf also voiced his dismay for Utah’s political leadership last month in the <em style="box-sizing: inherit;">Salt Lake Tribune</em>, writing the leadership had “unleashed an all-out assault against Utah’s protected public lands and Utah’s newest monument.” He encouraged Outdoor Retailer to leave the state in disgust.</div><div style="box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">“Whether the group should stay in Utah or not is based on the public land issues that are occurring,” says Amy Roberts, executive director at OIA. “Many members, and Patagonia is the loudest, are expressing discontent over public land issues in the state. We have a long history of advocating for public lands, so efforts to sell them or devalue them are not in alignment with our core industry values. A large part of Utah’s economy is driven by outdoor recreation, so it’s an image the state needs to maintain and right now it is being tarnished.”</div></div><span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br style="box-sizing: inherit;" />Read more at http://www.powder.com/stories/news/patagonia-withdraws-from-utah-outdoor-retailer-looking-for-new-home/#UPDZALlCkCjq3Mes.99</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04519166242725719159noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523770828450988486.post-53868140973177315292016-11-28T16:08:00.000-08:002016-11-28T16:08:26.247-08:00Patagonia Plans to Donate $2 Million from Black Friday Sales<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px;">Black Friday sales are huge </span>boons<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px;"> to retailers and make up a significant portion of their income. But Patagonia has decided to forgo any profits this year and instead donate </span><a href="http://www.patagonia.com/blog/2016/11/100-percent-today-1-percent-every-day/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">100 percent</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px;"> of the money it brings in on this one day (through both its stores and website) to grassroots environmental organizations working on conservation issues related to climate change and soil, water, and air quality.</span></div>

Patagonia estimates sales on Black Friday to reach more than $2 million, which will make this one of the company’s largest one-time donations. The list of potential grant recipients is long and varied and includes places like the <a href="http://grandcanyonwildlands.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Grand Canyon Wildlands Council</a>, the <a href="http://cacoastkeeper.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">California Coastkeeper Alliance</a>, <a href="http://winterwildlands.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Winter Wildlands Alliance</a>, <a href="https://350.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">350.org</a>, <a href="https://www.accessfund.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Access Fund</a>, <a href="http://www.surfrider.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Surfrider Foundation</a>, and many more.</div>

“These are small groups, often underfunded and under the radar, who work on the front lines,” Rose Marcario, CEO and president of Patagonia, wrote in a <a href="http://www.patagonia.com/blog/2016/11/100-percent-today-1-percent-every-day/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">statement</a>. “The support we can give is more important now than ever.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.65; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Patagonia, a founding member of <a href="http://onepercentfortheplanet.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">1% for the Planet</a> (a coalition of companies that give at least one percent of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations), has stuck to this cause and donated more than $74 million since 1985.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.65; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Durango, Colorado–based <a href="http://conservationlands.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Conservation Lands Foundation</a>, which works to protect public lands, has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Patagonia over the past five years and could be on the list to receive more from this week’s Black Friday sales. “Right now, we’re losing open space at a rapid pace, and we’re seeing a huge decline in wildlife across the globe,” says Brian O’Donnell, executive director for the foundation.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.65; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Patagonia isn’t the only outdoor company rethinking Black Friday. REI will again be closing all of its 149 stores and shutting down its website to encourage customers and employees to head outside. Outdoor Research will also be closing its Seattle headquarters and retail store on Friday and plans to donate up to $5,000 to an adaptive sports nonprofit. And for the third year, <a href="http://www.arcadebelts.com/blog/white-friday-dont-discount-donate/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Arcade Belts is promoting White Friday</a> and will donate $5 for every belt sold through Thanksgiving weekend to the nonprofit organization <a href="http://protectourwinters.org/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #9b1e25; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Protect Our Winters</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.65; margin-top: 1em;">
“We have made so much progress on climate recently, but with the recent election results, we stand a good chance to losing much of that progress,” says Chris Steinkamp, executive director of Protect Our Winters, which also receives funding from Patagonia. “The companies that are standing up and sacrificing profits this week are making a bold statement that the planet comes first. And we truly appreciate that.”</div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Press Release – SALT LAKE CITY, (September 7, 2016) – Niche Snowboards announced their move to The Mothership, the most environmentally responsible snowboard factory in the world, to produce their line of eco-friendly snowboards.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Located in Feistritz an der Gail, Austria, The Mothership is a 100 percent hydro powered facility, providing all energy for production and climate control resulting in a zero C02 emission release. The facility also includes other progressive capabilities like the use of water-based inks, plant-based resin and solvent-free finishing. In addition, the facility sources raw materials from suppliers in close proximity to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Mothership offers complete in-house production capabilities as well as a state of the art R&D lab and on-site testing slope. Onsite in-line testing of raw materials and finished product ensures the highest standard of manufacturing from start to finish.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“Partnering with The Mothership is a match made in heaven. We are beyond thrilled to have found a home with like-minded, passionate people, who share our desire to make choices that lessen our impacts on the planet and preserve the climate we need in order to enjoy snowboarding,” said <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ana Van Pelt</strong>, Co-Founder of Niche Snowboards. <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Kirsten Kolter</strong>, Co-Founder of Niche adds, “The Mothership is a beautiful architectural and progressive accomplishment that will set the standard for production in our industry. Working with The Mothership will give Niche the ability to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in snowboard manufacturing.”</span></div>

Just ask the riders currently digging into a West Coast buffet of powder if they remember the last two winters when snowfall fell to record lows, or the fact that the region’s snowpacks decreased an average of 23 percent from 1955 to 2015. Nope, too busy turning and burning through 54-inch storms. When your life revolves around a sport like snowboarding, it’s hard to not be myopic in focusing on the here and now. Getting lost in the present moment is, after all, one of the most beautiful things about strapping into a snowboard.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">But it’s just those moments that are at risk from climate change. Paris might seem like light years away from the mountains we hold dear, but over the past two weeks, this European capitol hosted a historic conference that laid out a plan to prevent climate change from spinning out of control. The only catch? It’s still up to us to turn solutions into reality. I had the opportunity to attend the COP21— here’s what leaders agreed on in Paris and why it’s critical to snowboarding.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">World Leaders Agree on Slowing Climate Change</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />On November 30th, the largest gathering of heads of state arrived at the Paris UN Climate Change Conference (COP21). It wasn’t the first time the UN tried to address climate change—as the catchy COP21 title implies, the 20 prior Climate Change Conferences didn’t yield much progress. Past COPs didn’t even try to include carbon emissions by still-developing countries, including China (now the biggest carbon emitter in the world and arguably the biggest economy), and the US itself walked out on the last big agreement, the Kyoto Protocol in 1992.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">We’ve been breaking global heat records year after year, for a decade and a half now, and 2015 is on track to be the latest to top this list. This time around, climate change was finally seen as an immediate threat, and many of the 190-plus countries attending the Paris conference simply couldn’t afford another COP failure.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Within snowsports, we’ve had years of anecdotal and scientific evidence on the industry-ending effects of shortened winters and rising temperatures. At an international level, study after study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) points toward impacts we’re already experiencing, and the irreversible and cumulative chaos if we allow climate change to continue.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">While governments wallowed on a binding agreement to limit fossil fuel emissions, business leaders got sick of waiting and dropped in on clean tech innovations themselves. And a growing “people’s climate movement” mobilized hundreds of thousands around the world in a call for an immediate and just shift to a fossil-fuel-free future.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Even before Paris, COP21 differed from the last COP in Copenhagen six years ago, as nations representing 95 percent of global emissions pledged significant emissions reductions. This time, the US emerged as a major player—not only committing to our own reductions in the face of a congress bent on blocking President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, but ultimately urging outliers like China and India to join on a decision that needed to be unanimously accepted by over 190 countries.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">And after two weeks of heady debate and all-night discussions, Paris did what all the other COPs failed to do: it produced a landmark agreement and an international pathway to reducing carbon emissions across the world. Bam.</div><div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_1000254925" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 610px;"><a href="http://cdn.snowboarding.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/442/files/2015/12/IMG_7464.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #474747; text-decoration: none;"><div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">image: http://cdn.snowboarding.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/442/files/2015/12/IMG_7464-e1450397286128-600x600.jpg</div><img alt="Jesse Huffman's point of view from COP21. That forecast isn’t clear yet. The Paris deal is being applauded by some as a miracle of diplomacy and a new era of international collaboration. Others are pointing to the fact that current commitments from countries won’t limit additional warming much more than three degrees by 2100. That’s a good deal more than the two degrees scientists warn will trigger irreversible changes to our weather, and much more than the 1.5 degrees that developing, poor and coastal communities say is the maximum before loss of life due to flooding, drought, famine, and disease jumps into in the millions.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Try to understand how the “Paris Deal” will actually reduce emissions and you could end up down an Internet rabbit-hole of cat-video proportions. That’s because after so many failures to produce a legally binding treaty, the COP21 agreement is almost completely voluntary, with actual measures to reduce emissions up to each country to craft and implement. The main Paris deal requirement is for transparent evaluations of progress and a five-year check up— when the plan is to have each country deepen their emissions reductions. What’s next? The COP countries will get back together in 2023 to see where everyone is at.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">“Basically the agreement is just that…an agreement,” explains Olympic and X Games Gold Medalist and environment activist Gretchen Bleiler, who was at the COP21. “We basically have ten years to work together as a global community in order to preserve not just our winters, but an environment that makes living on planet earth inhabitable for human beings.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />We got commitments from coalitions at international, national, city and individual levels for a rapid development and deployment of renewable technologies— and pumping the brakes on fossil fuels. Bill Gates committed two billion dollars in personal investment. But we didn’t get anything as clear as a law that says, “thou shall not pollute.” The US itself was one of the main countries preventing the Paris Deal from becoming legally binding— everyone knew that the US Congress would never ratify a climate treaty.</div><div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_1000254926" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 535px;"><a href="http://cdn.snowboarding.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/442/files/2015/12/Gretchen-Bleiler-Climate-Change.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #474747; text-decoration: none;"><div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">image: http://cdn.snowboarding.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/442/files/2015/12/Gretchen-Bleiler-Climate-Change.jpg</div><img alt="Gretchen Bleiler has become one of the most outspoken and educated members of the snowsports community on the issue of climate change. Photo: Chris Wellhausen</div></div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">It’s Still Up To Us</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />For folks fighting against climate change, this is a moment to take a breath and recognize that world leaders are aware of the impacts we’re already experiencing, and the threat of a future thrown into chaos. Paris is known as the “City of Light,” and the COP21 embodied that to a tee, illuminating climate change like never before. Now that all the COP21 countries have packed up and headed home with the responsibility of following through, it’s up to us to make sure that light doesn’t waver. “Coming together and agreeing to a global strategy is really a huge step in the right direction,” says Bleiler. “But now each country must go back and do the work, and then just as importantly, reconvene in another five years to assess what has been done and reassess how things can get even better. ”</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Back in the mountains, that responsibility trickles down to each and every snowboarder. Before Paris, the push was to demand action from world leaders. After Paris, that directive is still there—with the added imperative that to limit warming to1.5 degrees, we can’t rely on governments alone. Mountainous regions across the world face similar challenges from climate change. But much like the era when snowboarding first made its debut at ski resorts, the solutions and barriers to progress differ dramatically around the globe: some places embraced riders right off the bat, while some required arcane tests administered by ski instructors who never rode themselves. But no matter what they faced when they rolled up to the lifts, every snowboarder was there to push the sport farther.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">“What I have learned in Paris is that there is no silver bullet solution to limiting our warming to no more than two degrees,” says Bleiler. “It’s more like ‘silver buckshot,’ meaning that we will have to divide the task up among a wide array of existing partial fixes that add up to a whole solution—which is why leadership in every sector, and at every level, is necessary for change.”</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">That’s why activists like Bleiler are encouraged that there is no single solve for climate change: the goal of radically reducing carbon emissions is shared, but way we get there will be up to each individual and region to determine. The Paris Deal boils down to a technocratic document that would make even the most committed policy wonk glaze over. But making it come alive in the real world depends on the DIY ethos that every dedicated snowboarder knows is at the core of our culture.</div><div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_1000254927" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 610px;"><a href="http://cdn.snowboarding.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/442/files/2015/12/white-house-selfie-e1446246928612.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #474747; text-decoration: none;"><div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px;">image: http://cdn.snowboarding.transworld.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/442/files/2015/12/white-house-selfie-e1446246928612-600x450.jpg</div><img alt="Some of the Protect Our Winters Riders Alliance crew in Washington, DC, this fall advocating for policies that reduce fossil fuel emissions. That’s some serious weight in terms of carbon reductions and policy influence. Getting such a large group of companies, brands and industries to collaborate, however, will take a concerted and coordinated effort from some 23 million wintersports enthusiasts that power the 66 billion dollar giant. The good news is there’s already a lot of progress.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Hopefully you’ve heard about <a href="http://protectourwinters.org/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #474747; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Protect Our Winters (POW)</a>, the non-profit founded by big mountain pioneer Jeremy Jones. POW started with grassroots awareness, and has grown to include education and activism from the local to national levels, recently garnering kudos from Congress for helping nudge the state of Utah toward accepting President Obama’s Clean Power Plan. In pretty much every mountainous region they’ve got organizers working on municipal levels to push progress on carbon reduction forward, making POW the first stop for participation.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">“Not everyone is passionate about the same things, so the point is to just get involved and activate where you feel drawn, interested, curious or passionate,” says Bleiler. “There is a lot that needs to be done at every level, so we all need to get involved and stand up and either start implementing those changes where you can, or rally people around creating the demand for it.”</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Other organizations are getting in the mix, also. <a href="https://www.climaterealityproject.org/pro-snow" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #474747; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">The Climate Reality Project’s <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">I Am Pro Snow </em></a>program is building a coalition of 20 or more towns, business and ski resorts that are committing to transitioning to 100-percent renewable energy by 2030. It only makes sense that an industry dependent on consistently cold temperatures, and so vulnerable to the effects of climate change, would be leading the way nationally, but as a group, we’re still short on long-term vision and commitment. I’m not above that short-term memory loss. As I write this, we’re just a degree off the warmest Vermont December on record, the latest uptick in a warming trend that’s seen Burlington’s average temperature rise about three degrees since 1915.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">If the state were inundated by snow mercury-busting cold like last year, I might just be distracted. But I just got back from the COP21 also, and what I picked up there is an inspiration for action, and sense of global unity and urgency around climate change that can’t be easily shaken.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">So enjoy the pow, but let it also be a reminder of the just what’s at stake here. It’s a privilege to play outdoors, and it’s also a call to protect the most precious resource of all. Paris delivered a way forward, but it’s going to take everyone, everywhere, doing their part to pull it off. By using natural rubber in the suits we are reducing the CO2 emissions required to produce traditional neoprene suits by up to 80 percent. The FSC certified rubber is blended with 15 percent neoprene-free synthetic rubber for the benefits of increased ozone and UV resistance to meet Patagonia’s rigorous demands for durability and strength.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">The new plant-based material pioneered by Yulex is sourced from a hevea plantation that is independently certified to the FSC standard by the Rainforest Alliance, ensuring that products are produced using environmentally responsible practices.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">As with their previous work, Patagonia and Yulex will again share this groundbreaking innovation with other companies, hoping to create a shift toward cleaner and better materials throughout the surf industry. Aspire Eyewear is created with SDN-4, a specially designed nylon material proprietary to the brand. Cutting-edge design for the label was made possible through the use of advanced 3-D printing capabilities—reducing prototype lead time from two months to 20 minutes in some cases, which allows for design responsiveness to eyewear trends in each moment.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">“There is a lot of interest these days in wearable technology,” said Peter Friedfeld, Executive Vice President, ClearVision Optical. “But from a practical standpoint, the core issues related to eyewear for consumers remain design and wearability. Most people wear their glasses every day, all day. And the pair they choose to wear in many ways comes to define their personality. We felt that the average eyewear frame today was bulky and not up to the aesthetic and performance standards of other accessories that consumers use daily. We invested in developing the SDN-4 technology and advanced 3-D printing capabilities so that we could change that and bring a product to market that 'aspires' to keep up with today's consumer.”</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">New material and technology leads to new design capability: Designed for the manufacture of extremely lightweight eyewear with exceptional thinness, the hypoallergenic SDN-4 material also offers shape memory, is heat resistant, and will not fade in UV exposure. Using customized SDN-4 sheet material, Aspire frames are not injected, but created with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery to produce unique shapes and color possibilities. Aspire Eyewear also features a proprietary anti-slip nose pad system that does not leave a mark on the wearer, and a revolutionary seamless hinge, eliminating the need to replace screws in eyewear.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">This philosophy of aspiring to transcend is integrated by the label beyond its use of advanced technologies. The question Aspire Eyewear branding asks the eyeglass wearer is: “Who Do You Aspire To Be?” That message is carefully articulated in personality-driven product designed for both men and women. The brand referenced popular trends, classic motifs, and advanced architectural aesthetics to appeal to different personality types when designing its initial collection of 12 styles for men and women, as well as three sunglasses styles. Each of the 36 frames and 5 temple designs in the collection are detachable, giving the wearer the opportunity to further personalize their own eyewear. The Aspire Eyewear logo is placed subtly inside the frame of each pair of glasses, because the label feels it shares creative responsibility with the wearer. The inspiration is that, together, both the frame and the wearer bond to reflect the special qualities required to “aspire” to transcend in a new generation.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">###</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">About Aspire</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">Launched in 2015, Aspire Eyewear is a new brand from ClearVision Optical. The brand introduced eyewear frames that are 50 percent lighter and thinner than anything introduced to the eyewear industry before it, offering consumers a “barely there” fit and feel. This next generation frame was made possible through the use of a proprietary SDN-4 technology and advanced 3-D printing capabilities. The philosophy behind the branding for this label is based on the question: “Who Do You Aspire To Be?” This message is carefully articulated in its personality-driven design for both men and women. The brand references popular trends, classic motifs, and advanced architectural aesthetics to express different personality types in its collection.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">About ClearVision Optical</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">Founded in 1949, ClearVision Optical is an award-winning leader in the optical industry, designing and distributing eyewear and sunwear for top brands such as Aspire Eyewear, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Cole Haan, Ellen Tracy, IZOD, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew, Op, and Jessica McClintock. <strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">SALT LAKE CITY, UT</strong> – <a href="https://www.skiutah.com/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ski Utah</strong></a>, a membership organization representing Utah’s 14 alpine ski resorts, and <a href="http://protectourwinters.org/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Protect Our Winters</strong></a> (POW) are proud to announce a partnership with the mission of raising awareness of climate change and uniting the winter sports community in the state of Utah.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Protect Our Winters is the environmental axis of the global winter sports community, powered by its goal of reducing the effect climate change is imposing on our local sports and economies. Ski Utah is dedicated to promoting the ski and snowboard industry in the great state of Utah. The state is famous for its world-class resorts including Alta, Beaver Mountain, Brian Head Resort, Brighton Resort, Cherry Peak Resort, Deer Valley Resort, Eagle Point Resort, Nordic Valley Resort, Park City, Powder Mountain, Snowbasin Resort, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, Solitude Mountain Resort and Sundance Resort as well as having The Greatest Snow on Earth®. Together POW, Ski Utah and these renowned resorts can impact the entire community and industry with incredible success.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
To show Ski Utah’s immediate commitment to POW, CEO/President of Ski Utah, Nathan Rafferty, sent a letter to Governor Herbert asking for his public support of the EPA Clean Power Plan and to urge him to submit an on-time strategy to achieve the targets set forth in the Clean Power Plan. “As a leading advocate for one of Utah’s greatest assets, The Greatest Snow on Earth, and its $1.2 billion-dollar winter tourism industry, it is a natural fit for Ski Utah to partner with POW,” says Rafferty. “POW has done an excellent job representing the global snowsports community in the fight against climate change. We look forward to supporting POW’s mission and raising further climate change awareness here in Utah.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
“We’re honored to be partnering with Ski Utah,” says Executive Director of Protect Our Winters, Chris Steinkamp, “With so much at stake and with so many POW members and athletes living in Utah, this partnership will only accelerate our efforts to unite Utah’s winter recreation community around environmental responsibility and climate action this year.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Moving forward, Ski Utah will encourage snowsports participants to join POW’s efforts through print, digital and social campaigns. In an effort to raise local and national awareness around the cause, Ski Utah, Protect Our Winters and Discrete with efforts from Alta and Snowbird will be hosting the first ‘POW Day’ on Jan. 13, 2016. According to NOAA, Jan. 13 statistically has the highest percentage for snowfall in the Wasatch over any other day of the year. On this day Ski Utah will be encouraging skiers and riders to carpool, take UTA or ride-share to help lower CO2 emissions, reduce traffic congestion and increase overall awareness around environmental accountability.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">

<em style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">Compton doesn’t have the best reputation. For many of the kids that live there, it’s all they know and all they ever will know. Broken homes, drugs, violence, bad influences. The guys at 686 decided to make a difference in their neighborhood, partnering with the Boys & Girls Club to create the Compton Snow Club, which provides an outlet for at-risk youth to get outside and get an opportunity to experience something they otherwise wouldn’t be able to: snowboarding. With a portion of proceeds going directly to the area’s Boys & Girls Club, 686 is helping expose these kids to positive things in their lives. Read the accounts from 686 Team Rider Forest Bailey and Team Manager Patrick McCarthy about their experience with the Compton Snow Club — Jens Heig, Online Editor</em><br /><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #4a4a4a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">“Last winter I headed down to California to hang out with 686 and Matix and be a part of the Compton Snow Club. It was one of the best days of my winter. It was so cool to take a bunch of fresh minds up to the mountain and get them stoked on snowboarding; something that’s brought me joy almost my entire life. There are a ton of bright young minds involved in the program, smart kids, some of which took right to boarding, and some that are more interested in creating, or photography. To see them all get stoked on snowboarding was fun, and realistically it’s just fun for them to get out of the city and into the mountains for one day. Some had never had that opportunity before, that’s a reality check. We are so lucky to be able to experience what we do as snowboarders. In my mind, it’s all about hoping the kids get inspired and learn that anything is possible and that there are a million different ways to live your life. I can’t wait for the next time i get to go down and hang with those kids again. I also hope to be able to continue spreading the idea of snowboarding to fresh minds in other areas through and extended version of the Compton Snow Club.”</span><br /><br />

We took the kids skateboarding, did some artwork with them, showed them a few snowboard video parts and explained what we are all about. Their reactions to our interaction were inspiring. Seeing the kids lighting up with excitement during the day gave us a new vitality. I remember personally leaving from the first day with the kids thinking that was the most rewarding thing that I had done that year. At the end of that first session, I picked out my favorite kid and handed him my skateboard. It was a liberating feeling and I think everyone at 686 wanted to figure out more ways to give back.</div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px;">Putting is simply, these kids are not from a good place – the streets of Compton are not a joke. Gang activity, social pressures and the absence of a lot of the standards many of us grew up with or have become accustomed to putting these youth at risk from day 1. Even though they live in this big beautiful city of L.A., most of these kids barely know life outside of a few local blocks that are filled with social traps carrying lifelong consequences. If we can expose them to things outside of their everyday life on the streets, and dreams of being a big shot rapper or basketball player (which in many cases eventually leaves them empty and still exposed to local social pressures at a young age) like snow and nature, we can possibly open their eyes to a world outside their ‘hood. Together we can help them think bigger and find their “way out.”</div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px;">Take some time to give back if you can — that is what Compton Snow Club is all about. We have coach’s jackets, hoodies, shirts and hats available in our site and everything made from the sales of the product goes directly to help the boys and girls clubs of Compton, California. By working with the club weekly and taking them snowboarding when possible, I hope we can help at least one kid better themselves and those around them. If even just that happens, snowboarding has saved another life. For that, I am grateful.”</div><div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 24px;">— <a href="http://snowboardmag.com/videos/pat-mccarthy-shred-a-vision-full-part" style="background: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #e92020; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Patrick McCarthy</a></div><em style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #4a4a4a; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"></em><br /><br />

Fortunately, we have a historic opportunity to help improve air quality and combat climate change through the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed Clean Power Plan, which aims to reduce pollution from our country's electricity sector. The plan is critical to protecting Utah's outdoor industries, particularly the ski industry, which is under threat by the impacts of climate change.</div><div class="TAGLINE" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, HelveticaNeue-Light, 'Helvetica Neue Light', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 10px;">Regardless of whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or not, you want this industry to thrive. Utah's ski industry alone provides 20,000 jobs and contributes $1.29 billion to Utah's economy. The Outdoor Industry Association reports that Utah's outdoor recreation brings $12 billion in consumer spending, $3.6 billion in wages and salaries and almost $900 million in direct state and local taxes. Despite being a major economic driver, the outdoor industry is competing for influence on Capitol Hill against powerful lobbying groups motivated to shut down the Clean Power Plan.</div><div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, HelveticaNeue-Light, 'Helvetica Neue Light', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 10px;">As representatives of Utah's outdoor industry, we view the Clean Power Plan as not only vital to our business future, but a doable, workable opportunity that will benefit Utah citizens and businesses. The reality is that the outdoor industry, particularly the ski industry, is feeling the impacts of climate change now and Utah needs the Clean Power Plan to help protect a primary contributor to our economy.</div><div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, HelveticaNeue-Light, 'Helvetica Neue Light', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 10px;">To Black Diamond Inc., which provides world-class gear to skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, the Clean Power Plan is a small step in the right direction. In fact, our industry has a business imperative to advocate for it. It is not idealism or political motivation to see this. It is mathematics and economics that illustrates Utah and Black Diamond will be in much more serious pain without the healthy, multi-billion dollar ski, outdoor and active outdoor related tourism industries in our state.</div><div class="TEXT_w_Indent" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, HelveticaNeue-Light, 'Helvetica Neue Light', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 10px;">At Alta Ski Area, we're a founding member of the National Ski Areas Association Climate Challenge, a group of 30 ski areas committed to reducing emissions. Winter resorts like ours have had to up our accountability in the climate change arena to protect our business. But doing this doesn't break the bank or cost jobs. We have implemented common sense actions for increasing energy efficiency to cut emissions. These measures have been good for business — in fact, we see a financial return on every investment we make in energy efficiency.</div><div class="TAGLINE" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Arial, HelveticaNeue-Light, 'Helvetica Neue Light', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin-bottom: 10px;">While we may have different ideas about the best ways to power our future, there's no question that we can use energy more efficiently. Energy efficiency is a central part of the Clean Power Plan, and is so readily available it is almost comical. The study clearly shows that energy efficiency is an affordable and reliable strategy to help achieve the pollution reduction targets under the Clean Power Plan. Patagonia is upping its own environmental ante with a $1 million investment in Beyond Surface Technologies, a Swiss company that’s pushing petrochemicals out of the gear closet</h2>

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
ur ski jacket is full of petrochemicals. Ditto a fair amount of the other clothing in your closet that attains that magical, paradoxical state of being both waterproof and breathable when you’re hiking or biking up a steep ridge in a fierce storm.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Through decades of tweaks and improvements, material scientists and chemists have produced these miracle fabrics through a combination of membranes and finishes. High performance comes at an environmental cost, however, since these substances rely on petrochemical feed stocks. Plus, the use of perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in finishes used to create durable water-repellent (DWR) exteriors—a key part of that waterproof-breathable magic that outerwear can attain—has an especially dark side: The chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a by-product of PFC production, and studies have shown it to cause developmental problems in lab animals. The toxin, which plays a role in many industrial applications, has made its way into the environment, and small amounts are found everywhere, from the blood of polar bears to the blood of most humans.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Today, nearly every major outdoor apparel brand uses PFC-based finishes for waterproof-breathable jackets and pants. The EPA has been working with chemical companies for years to phase out the DWR finish, known as C8, that produces the most PFOA. Most companies are moving to a different DWR, known as C6, but here’s the rub: This alternative falls short in terms of performance, and it still generates trace amounts of PFOA. Plus, it’s still reliant on petrochemical feedstocks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span class="has-pullquote pullquote-fill" data-pullquote="“If it’s approved to rub into your skin or to eat, it should be okay to functionalize your textile with.”" style="box-sizing: border-box;"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
As part of its larger mission to reduce the environmental impacts of its products and supply chain, Patagonia announced earlier this month that its venture arm,<a href="http://www.patagoniaworks.com/#index" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #cc252a; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">$20 Million and Change</a>, has <a href="http://trendsblog.outdoorindustry.org/articles/374835/patagonia-invests-in-eco-friendly-performance-chem/" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #cc252a; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">invested $1 million in Beyond Surface Technologies</a> (BST), a Swiss startup that’s developing plant-based chemicals it believes can replace conventional PFC-based finishes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
BST was formed in 2008 by a group of textile industry veterans with a strong background in chemistry who wanted to produce waterproof-breathable textile finishes differently. “It dawned on me that it is a bit crazy what we were doing,” says BST director Mathias Foessel, referring to mainstream companies seeking alternative petro-based finishes. “We were developing products with inherent hazards, and then trying to find the best way to mitigate those risks or control those hazards.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
So BST started developing alternatives to the alternatives. “What if we eliminated the risks to begin with? Why not come up with [textile] finishes with lower hazards or no hazards? And then we can use crude oil for something more important.”</div>
<div class="adRefresh" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Five years in, BST has brought three different bio-based finishes to market that are already being used by a number of major brands, including Patagonia, Levi’s, Adidas, and Puma.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
These finishes include the <a href="http://www.beyondst.com/productsDetail.php?miDori-reg-bioSoft-27" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #cc252a; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Midori Biosoft</a>, which is designed for use on base layers;<a href="http://www.beyondst.com/productsDetail.php?miDori-reg-bioLink-29" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #cc252a; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Midori Biolink</a>, a natural acid-based finish for denim (replacing a conventional finish that contains formaldehyde, Foessel says); and <a href="http://www.beyondst.com/productsDetail.php?miDori-reg-evoPel-34" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #cc252a; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Midori Evopel</a>, which is the holy grail of textile finishes because it is designed for waterproof-breathable shell fabrics. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
BST is using a range of agricultural and algal products as feedstocks, with a focus on raw materials that have been approved to use in personal care products or food additives. “If it’s approved to rub into your skin or to eat, it should be okay to functionalize your textile with,” Foessel reasons. BST also avoids GMOs and plants that would compete with food crops. It is also using some waste products from the production of other bio-based chemicals, such as biodiesel. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
BST’s work is far from complete. Foessel says he’s confident that the Midori Biosoft and Biolink products are on par with the performance of their crude-based counterparts, but the current formulation for Evopel is a work in progress. For one, Evopel relies on a mix of crude- and bio-based feedstocks at this stage (Biosoft and Biolink are both 100 percent bio-based). For another, it’s not ready to go neck-and-neck with conventional waterproofing finishes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
“There is research needed to put it up a notch and increase performance,” he says of Evopel. “With PFCs used in sportswear and apparel, you have different classes of performance and expectations. We believe [Evopel] is not good enough yet.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
This is why that $1 million from Patagonia is well timed. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">

<div class="adRefresh" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
The financial support from $20 Million and Change is also the first outside funding BST has accepted; until now, the founders have bootstrapped the firm. “We have turned down other investors who wanted to take a larger role [in BST], and we declined because we felt it was important to keep the freedom of being able to work and test what we want to, and even fail and come back and restart. That’s part of the fun,” Foessel says. “We have to be independent in our decision making. We have a high rate of failure, and if there was someone in the back room trying to veto ideas, we’d not have gotten here.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
Of course, even if BST succeeds in disrupting the crude-based textile finishes sector, most of the fabric its products will be used on will continue to be derived from crude (although many polyesters are made from recycled PET bottles). </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 1.3em; margin-top: 1em;">
All consumer products have environmental impacts, and those impacts have to be viewed across the product’s entire lifecycle—natural fibers have drawbacks not only in terms of performance but also the amount of water needed to produce them compared to synthetics. Still, Foessel believes it may be possible to use the Biolink finish on base layers made from natural fibers and match the wicking performance of synthetics, though that would require innovations from other parts of the textile world. “We started at zero. We came with a strong passion. I think we need experts in other fields who can do the same [to put the performance of natural fibers on par with synthetics].”</div>

We can’t thank these partners enough for their commitment to us, the community and the environment.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">We prefaced this post with that because no matter how big or how small, corporate involvement in climate change is critical to save a season that’s an integral part of our culture and identity, but also the economic backbone of the global winter sports industry.<em><br /></em></span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">The most common question we ask ourselves on a daily basis at Protect Our Winters is, “How can we make the biggest impact?” In 2012, when considering getting involved with a massive fight against coal exports in the Pacific Northwest, we asked ourselves this again and started doing some research. First and foremost, the biggest opportunity we saw was that it became very apparent that part of the reason that the issue hasn’t risen to the level of <em>climate emergency</em> outside of the PNW is because the scope of the destruction is virtually unimaginable.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">It’s hard to fully imagine the impact 50 trains a day, loaded with coal, can have as they rumble through on their way from Wyoming, unless of course you live in one of the many small communities along the on the rail line, you’re one of the affected Native Americans who call these places sacred, or one of Washington state’s legendary waterways risking coal dust (or worse, a coal spill) in their fragile ecosystem. And then if that’s not enough, consider the global climate impacts when that coal is burned.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">And that begged the question: why are we all not aware of this when the amount of carbon emissions produced by the burning of this coal deposit alone outweighs that of Keystone XL and would undoubtedly result in irreversible impacts on the global climate?</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;"><em>Momenta </em>would be our way to truly illustrate what’s at stake and place it in the minds of a broader audience to spotlight what this small group of fossil fuel companies is risking for their own profits.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;"><img alt="coal-plant" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2629" height="195" src="http://gzg764m8l73gtwxg366onn13.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/coal-plant-300x195.jpg" style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;" width="300" /></span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">And so <em>Momenta</em> was born.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">First step: funding. In all truth, we undertook a documentary project that was probably bigger than we were able to execute at the time, but it was important to us and our members that we do something meaningful. The price tag was bigger than any project we’d ever undertaken, so we filmed an incredibly powerful trailer and threw it up on Kickstarter. The donations came in from local citizens that truly cared, but we came up short. By a lot.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">With seven hours to go before the Kickstarter campaign was scheduled to end (and if you don’t make your campaign goal by the end, you don’t get anything) we had pretty must lost hope on bringing <em>Momenta </em>to life.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">It was 10:30 p.m. in Los Angeles. Then the phone rang. It was Ed Lewis from SNOCRU, a social startup app for the winter sports community based in Park City, calling from Gillette, WY (home of the Powder River Basin). He wanted to know more about <em>Momenta</em>. He was driving to Utah and was blown away by the destruction from the coal mining in the area and wanted to get SNOCRU involved somehow, as he knew what more burned coal in the world meant to global CO2 levels. I filled him in on <em>Momenta</em> and after hearing about the soon-to-be-failed Kickstarter campaign he simply asked, <span style="margin-bottom: 15px;">“how much do you need?”</span></span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">Within minutes, Kickstarter alarms were going off in my email and with six hours to go, <em>Momenta</em> was funded. We launched<em>Momenta</em> this week, in very large part because of the generosity and the commitment of a startup brand called SNOCRU and a CEO who knows that without paying attention to the environment, there will be no need for businesses like his own.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white;">And that’s what we hope other brands in the snow community will do – see beyond today and understand that in order to stay in business for generations, we all need to act like SNOCRU, to visualize what a world without snow would be like and take meaningful action. It’s time to step up and help protect our winters, for our livelihoods and for future generations.</span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 15px;">Watch Momenta here for free, now: <a href="http://www.momentaproject.com/" style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">www.momentaproject.com</a></span></div><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><span style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 15px;">Learn more about SNOCRU here: <a href="http://www.snocru.com/" style="border-image-outset: initial; border-image-repeat: initial; border-image-slice: initial; border-image-source: initial; border-image-width: initial; border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;"> http://www.snocru.com</a></span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04519166242725719159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523770828450988486.post-698331609067920972015-02-25T09:42:00.001-08:002015-02-25T09:42:22.814-08:00Boombot REX <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioM2gGpaki3OWrRUZqe5ppewoTrAKViYgtj3gQw5Ca_Bj3rJr9xisHfgs2uNXsCs1zcJ1MCxhEDUfi8V-Ocwip2Ux5Cqn81P7fnULHYBONYpAFN4TaX2hAtROEjwZ4WCNev10KloPskkA/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-02-25+at+9.37.13+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioM2gGpaki3OWrRUZqe5ppewoTrAKViYgtj3gQw5Ca_Bj3rJr9xisHfgs2uNXsCs1zcJ1MCxhEDUfi8V-Ocwip2Ux5Cqn81P7fnULHYBONYpAFN4TaX2hAtROEjwZ4WCNev10KloPskkA/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-02-25+at+9.37.13+AM.png" height="296" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Boombotix, a leader in portable music</span></span><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, 'Century Gothic', Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;"> technology, announces the “Build-A-Bot” customization tool for the Boombot REX. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The Build-A-Bot also comes with limited edition artwork created by Benny Gold (MSRP </span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The Boombot REX ultraportable Bluetooth speaker connects to iPods, computers, </span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: TwCenMT-Regular, Futura, Century Gothic, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">tablets and other smartphones with Bluetooth capability. We also need to continue pressuring world leaders to make policy changes that regulate and reduce carbon emissions because we all want to keep riding for generations to come.”</span></div><div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To select candidates for the award, TransWorld SNOWboarding and Protect Our Winters looked for riders who inspired others, took meaningful action, and did something notable in the past year in the fight against climate change.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After careful consideration of several riders who embodied this spirit, Marie-France Roy was chosen for her bold move to step away from filming a traditional video part to make The Little Things movie.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The film includes some riding but focuses mostly on Roy’s own efforts to reduce her environmental footprint and highlights other riders taking action on the grassroots and political levels, including Jeremy Jones, Gretchen Bleiler, and Tamo Campos.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Marie took a risk and stepped out of her comfort zone to make this film,” says Gerhard Gross, Managing Editor at TransWorld SNOWboarding. “She had no idea how it would be received since it’s very different from most snowboard videos, but breaking away from the status quo is exactly the type of action we need to see more of in the fight against climate change.”</span></div><div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">While it’s difficult to have zero carbon footprint, Roy has consistently looked for ways to reduce her impact in her daily life, making her an example to snowboarders everywhere, another reason she was chosen for this award.</span></div><div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Join us on Friday, January 30 at the Ogden Theater in Denver, Colorado to recognize Marie-France Roy for breaking the mold and standing up for what she believes in.
