JURY STATEMENT
"Of the jackets that I have seen today, the clear winner is the Welcome Jacket Picture Organic Clothing. Fabric is strong and robust, the technical details are well made and durable and the 100% recyclable concept is unique and original . I would definitely wear! "
i.N.i. in an environmentally conscious clothing and outerwear company I recently came across in a snowboard magazine advertisement I like the look of their products and really admire their use of recycled, organic, and Bluesign approved materials. Below is a bit on i.N.i. from ESPN's 2012 Ski and Snowboard Eco Gear Guide:
For 2013, i.N.i. is producing at least half its products right here in the U.S. The crosshatch denim-styled Refinery Jacket and Crucial Cargo pants seen above are constructed of 55 percent hemp and 45 percent polyester made from recycled plastic bottles.
i.N.i. uses 100% percent Bluesign Approved Polyester (Bluesign is an independent approval system for the textile industry, taking into account the whole production process, minimizing the impact on the environment and safeguarding human health.) For more info visit inicooperative.com or find them on facebook.
Whatever nature brings you can count on Planet Earth to keep you warm, dry and prepared, with timeless streetwear and technical outerwear that also happens to be one of the deepest year round, eco-conscious product lines in the industry. Check out their 2012 Fall/Winter Collection HERE!
Below is a list of the sustainable elements found in Planet Earth's products.
ORGANIC COTTON
100% of our cotton products are made from a blend of virgin and certified organic cotton
Our cottons can potentially be recycled making it a renewable resource without compromising performance. All Planet Earth cottons are grown and processed from IMO (Institute for MArket ecology) Certified Fields and are SCP (Sustainable Cotton Project) compliant. Look it up at www.SustainableCotton.org or www.Imo.ch.
RECYCLED PET
100% of our polyester fabrics are made from a blend of virgin and recycled PET.
We offer both 2 layer and 3 layer fabric of which our 3 layer in not only made of 100% recycled polyester but is also completely RECYCLABLE! The 3 layers bonded as one are made with a Dupont Active Layer membrane for superior wind and water protection that literally keeps you dry for up to 8 hours in ice storms. Although there isn't recycling bins for your 3 layer jacket today, it's the first step in making the right change for tomorrow.
FORMALDEHYDE FREE INKS and DYES
100% of our inks and fabric dyes are formaldehyde-free. We use water-based inks and dyes that are environmentally friendly and durable, looking sharp and true to their original color over time. Facts: Formaldehyde is traditionally used in inks and dyes yet has recently been determined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer that it is a carcinogen (cancer-causing substance).
RECYCLED and RECYLABLE POLY BAGS
100% of our products are packed in 100% recyclable poly bags!
We even printed the recycling reminder on them with water based inks. So unlike the thousands of other bags you’ve been forced to throw into the environment over your lifetime, go ahead and throw these into the recycling bin with your bottles and they might become your next jacket, board short, or just another bag. Facts: Four to five trillion Polyethylene plastic bags are manufactured each year. It takes 1,000 years for them to break down during which times toxic substances leach into the soil and the food chain. Each year approximately 1 billion sea birds and mammals and 100,00 marine mammals die eating them. S. CAFE FABRIC - Drink it, Wear it! S.Cafe is a technical composite fiber made from recycled coffee grounds. The fiber is used to make yarn, and then into knitted or woven fabric. S.Cafe utilizes coffee grounds' natural ability to absorb odors for a comfortable wearing experience. It also provides UVA and UVB protection, and it is very fast drying. Coffee grounds that have been added into the fiber are collected from coffee shops. After brewing they are generally taken as waste. Brewing also takes away some of the other substances in the coffee grounds, which make the production procedures less energy intensive.
The Nike Gore Juniper Jacket is a good looking technical jacket with Recycled PET GORE TEX™ 2 Layer Performance Shell Fabric! It's great to see Nike using recycled materials in their outerwear! Here are the other specs:
If you aren't familiar with Bond Outerwear you should visit their site and check out their products as they are one of the most progressive if not the most progressive snowboard outerwear companies in terms of sustainability. All of their outer shells and inner liners utilize a blend of recycled PET (made from plastic bottles and containers), and virgin polyester that is completely recyclable. Both are materials that have been used before and can be used again for years to come. All snaps, zipper pulls, and buttons are made from discarded plastic pellets from heavy industry. Bond offsets all their carbon usage for everything from their office power to shipping through Carbonfund.org, and ship directly from their suppliers to their retailers which reduces and saves on fuel usage and unnecessary packaging waste. Bond holds their entire collection to high standards and work everyday to find new ways to innovate and make the most environmentally considered snowboard outerwear on the market.
Apparel Magazine’s2011 Sustainability All-Starsprogram recognized The North Face as one of five companies determined to make a difference for people and planet. The award, announced in the June 2011 issue, celebrates the innovative products and programs at The North Face and the company’s commitment to sustainability, including our partnership with bluesign, commitment to renewable energy, material innovation, waste and community.
The bluesign partnership is exciting for us because of the close relationship The North Face has built with them to influence our supplying factories to adopt some of the most stringent and innovative standards out there to reduce waste and chemical use. Apparel Magazine also called out our innovative redesign of the best-sellingVenture jacket. This year, the Venture jacket is being constructed from HyVent DT Eco fabric. The new fabric is made with natural castor oil, which saves more than 50,000 pounds of petroleum-based materials each year.
We also told ApparelMagazine about the steps we’ve taken in our operations, including the solar panel array at our Visalia,CA distribution center and our poly bag recycling program implemented throughout The North Face retail stores (more coming on this soon).
Finally, the editors at Apparel Magazine were equally as excited as we are about our educational campaigns. The Hot Planet, Cool Athletes program teaches kids about the effects of climate change on outdoor recreation through collaboration with advocacy groups Protect Our Winters and Alliance for Climate Education. If you haven’t looked at photographer James Blalog’s work tracking glacial recession through stunning time-lapse photography, check it out. We’re supporting his work observing the glacial loss at Mt. Everest to bring attention to the climate crisis and its effect on the world’s natural treasures.
Unfortunately Helly Hansen doesn't have a snowboard team but they do have a progressive environmentally conscious product line worth mentioning.
The following comes directly from Helly Hansen.
Global warming means less winter play. In order to help preserve cold winters for future generations, Helly Hansen introduces its second season of Ekolab products, a collection of waterproof breathable jackets and pants, midlayers, sportswear and footwear that incorporates recycled and natural materials, environmentally conscious manufacturing processes and an intelligently executed distribution strategy that minimizes transportation and fuel consumption. Ideas from the Ekolab R&D project are then integrated throughout the line to minimize Helly Hansen’s and ultimately the outdoor apparel industry’s impact on the environment.
New for 2009, the men’s and women’s Ekolab North Marker Jacket and Pants offer exceptional weather protection in Helly Tech XP nylon fabrics with a 15,000mm waterproof breathable rating. Unique to the North Marker, the protective membrane is PU-based and eliminates the need for environmentally damaging PTFE typically used by other brands. The exterior DWR of the jacket and pant is finished with a significantly reduce fluorocarbon coating that further protects from driving snow and rain. Zippers, pulls and snaps are made with recycled materials. To reduce the amount of fuel required to produce and ship Ekolab products, all materials are sourced close to the manufacturing facility and none are shipped by air to the distribution centers around the world"
They have also produced a boot in the same series:
"The Ekolab East Marker boot offers Helly Hansen quality and comfort with a sustainable design for the feet. The light hiker is built from top to bottom with earth friendly materials including a leather upper tanned through an environmentally sensitive process, and toxin-free Helly Tech waterproof breathable nylon; recycled laces, a recycled EVA midsole and pure natural rubber outsole. The durable boot has a TPU bar for stability under the arch and durable, grippy one-piece sole that holds on to rock and wet trails in snow and rain.

Everyone needs to check out Grün [pronounced: grew-en; meaning: green, ecologist] an indy company run by a small group of snowboarders and skateboarders. They are a new eco-ethical board wear company doing way more than the majority of companies to ensure their products are 100% eco friendly and ethically produced. Grün takes the raw garments then prints them by hand using water based inks. Likewise they used organic hand loomed cotton for clothing labels, and even the hang tags are made from re-purposed cardboard. The extent of what they do to remain truly eco-ethical is far in excess of the half measures employed by the rest of the market. Below is a detailed look into Grün’s environmentally aware practices and eco credentials.
100% ORGANIC PRODUCTS
100% organic product, produced under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and certified by Control Union and The Soil Association. The certification encompasses the farming, production and distribution, ensuring full traceability of every product. Grün's Earth-Positive based range is free from genetically modified organisms.
FAIR TRADE PRACTICES
Under the organic standard, farmers and agricultural workers are protected by stringent social criteria, total traceability across the entire supply chain, and also by the ban on the use of poisonous chemicals that can severely damage the health of farmers and their families. These standards also free poor farmers from third world debt to chemical companies on the ‘pesticide treadmill’.
JUSTICE FOR WORKERS
To help tackle the social injustice often seen in manufacturing, commonly known as sweatshop labour, Grün goes further, making transparent the manufacturing supply chain through an independent audit by the Fair Wear Foundation, which
promotes fair labour conditions in the clothing industry.
LOW CARBON
Made in manufacturing facilities in India powered by wind turbines, from low-impact organic cotton, and is distributed through carbon neutral warehouses and offices in that use only renewable green electricity.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Certified by the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard, Class I. The Oeko-Tex Standard is a guarantee of the safety of textiles and dyestuffs to human health and to the environment. It also means we take more care in adopting environmentally friendly production methods throughout the manufacturing process.
LOOK AFTER OUR WATER
The processing of the dye effluent takes place in a controlled closed-loop purification system that uses treatment ponds, sand filtration and reversed osmosis to convert the waste water into clean water.
LOW WATER FOOTPRINT
It can take more than 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton, equivalent to a single T-shirt and a pair of jeans. That’s why we chose to work in a region that receives up to 95% of its water from the monsoon rain. This was an important consideration for us, as the monsoon rain reduces the need for large-scale irrigation projects normally associated with conventional cotton farming, which often deprive local villages of scarce water resources by draining lakes and rivers.
PICK YOUR COTTON CAREFULLY
We guarantee that we do not use cotton from Uzbekistan while the use of forced child labour is endemic. This follows the recommendations of the Environmental Justice Foundation's ‘Clean Cotton Campaign’. The complete traceability of certified organic cotton allows us to make this guarantee.
TRANSPORTATION
‘No Airfreight’ policy. We use containerized ocean shipping, thus the carbon footprint generated by transporting our apparel to Europe, Japan and the USA is negligible, more like a fingerprint, less than 1% of the total. We cannot solve the world’s transportation and energy security issues, but we can ensure that our own methods do nothing to contribute to environmental damage, social injustice or climate change.
HAND FINISHED
Finally we hand print all our tees using non-toxic, non-hazardous, water based eco inks. This means that any spillage can simply washed away, and misprints can easily be remedied without wastage.
Just as importantly it means our gear doesn't pump synthetics into the environment. The ink becomes part of the fabric as opposed to sitting on top of the fabric. The benefit of this is that water based inks will not crack or peel off over time as with PVC based inks that have a raised and rubbery or plastic feel to them.
Planet Earth Clothing Co. is dedicated to striving for sustainability by shedding old habits and adopting new methods. Don’t look to them for the tallest tees, or brightest toxic hoodies, they're just building the stuff they're proud to wear. Oh...and they just turned 21! Bought their first beer legally, chugged it, and then recycled it. Cheers.
Learning how to be greener is like learning new tricks.
It always looks easier, takes longer, and hurts more, and when you finally stick it, the satisfaction fuels your commitment to step up to the next one. This describes the past 21 years for us in the streets and the office, and the reason we’ve got the most complete year round, top to bottom, eco-sensitive product line in action sports today. Here are some of the best tricks in our bag to date.
ORGANIC COTTON
Our cotton products are made from a blend of virgin and certified organic cotton
Just because cotton grows naturally on a plant, doesn’t mean it’s grown naturally. $2 billion USD worth of chemicals are sprayed on the world’s cotton crop every year, half of which is considered toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the World Health Organization. These chemicals pollute the soil, air, animals, farmers and us all. With only 0.15% of the world’s cotton today guaranteed to be pesticide free, it’s up to us all to continually raise awareness, and increase demand for organic cotton so that it can someday become the standard, instead of the anomaly.
RECYCLED PET
Our polyester fabrics are made from a blend of virgin and recycled PET
Polyethylene Terephthatlate (PET) is the stuff plastic drink bottles & food jars, and other things, are made of, yet only 30% are being recycled leaving the millions of tons a year dumped back into our environment. The best way to increase recycling is to increase the number of ways to use it. At the top of the list is clothing and carpet, accounting for 54% of post recycled PET use. So the next time you wear one of our jackets, feel good knowing you also created one more place for those recycled bottles to go.
NON-TOXIC INKS & DYES
Our inks and fabric dyes are non-toxic
Traditional pastisol printing inks used to create bold and vivid colors contain heavy metals, toxic solvents and even formaldehyde which was recently determined to be a cancer-causing substance. We use water-based inks and dyes and the most up-to-date bio-based plasticizer technology earning it a classification as 100% non-toxic. Our fabric colors and prints are just as durable, stay true to their original color and guarantee our garments as easy on the environment as they are on your body.
RECYCLED & RECYLABLE POLY BAGS
Our products are packed in 100% recycled poly bags that are also recyclable
More than four TRILLION Polyethylene plastic bags are manufactured each year. It takes 1,000 years for them to break down during which time toxic substances leach into the soil and the food chain. Each year approximately 1 BILLION sea birds and mammals die eating them. So unlike the thousands of other bags you’ve been forced to throw into the environment over your lifetime, go ahead and throw these into the recycling bin and they might become your next jacket.
