One Hundred Apparel - donating 100% of profits to creating access to clean water

One Hundred Apparel takes its name from the simple but elegant commitment to donate 100% of its profits to creating access to clean water. The clothing company uses water-based silk screening on their shirts and hoodies, which are known for their softness and fit, and gives them a stylish twist. We’re not talking about itchy tote bags as a token of appreciation for your help, but great t-shirts that you will love wearing, which in turn help create clean water access. A purchase of a t-shirt puts $10 towards a well-building project; for a hoodie, it’s even more, at $16.

One billion people can not count on getting clean water. We want to help. You want to help. One Hundred apparel, which has partnered with the universally-praised charity: water, is a great way to help, and get a cool new t-shirt in the process.

United By Blue - very cool ocean-friendly apparel brand

United By Blue is an ocean-friendly apparel brand that associates the sale of each product with an environmental action. Every time someone buys one of their items, the company removes one pound of trash from the ocean and other waterways by organizing and hosting cleanups.

United By Blue was founded by American-born entrepreneur Brian Linton in May 2010. He decided to use his company’s money to contribute to real and significant ocean conservation efforts. The brand offers a range of organic cotton t-shirts, canvas bags and artisan jewellery. After more than 60 cleanups, with help from over 1000 volunteers, a total of 82,527 pounds of trash has been removed from the water by the company to date.

atreebutes - A Clothing Alteration Project By Nicolas Müller & Frederik Kalbermatten

atreebutes is a cool new "clothing alteration project" by Nicolas Müller & Frederik Kalbermatten. They have an interesting view on the sustainability that i like. See for yourself...

There is this word.
Sustainability.
It is all over the place. It has become so popular that some people use it without considering what great responsibility comes with it.
Even the petrol industry and major airlines like the sound of this word and dig out the 2 green percent in their companies to create a global marketing campaign out of them.
Although our main goal at atreebutes is to make clothes that are better and healthier for people and have little to no impact on the environment, we have to take it easy with the use of the s word.
Because we know that everything we do messes something up. Even if we try to be a good or „less bad“ brand, we still create problems that wouldn’t be there without us. If we wanted to live a sustainable life, we shouldn’t be doing a clothing brand. It’s as easy as that.
You can buy an organic apple at your local farmer’s shop and with some luck it is 99% organic because there is mainly water and sun involved in growing that apple. But there are so many steps involved in making a simple T-shirt that once it is finished, it has done some harm. We are aware of that.
But on the other hand you have to start at some point. Without being intimidated by what problems might lie ahead of you. That’s why we’re cool with the fact that the s word is so popular right now. It creates awareness for what’s going on in this world. And if it motivates people to make only a small step into the right direction, it means they make one step less into the wrong.
That is our mission. No steps into the wrong direction.
What you see here is our personal first step.
If you like parts of it and it maybe even gets you to change some of your old ways, we are on the right track.
And if you like it even quite a bit and you would like to become a part of it, drop us a line.
You’re always welcome@atreebutes.com.

Grun Boardwear - eco friendly and ethically produced

Everyone needs to check out Grün [pronounced: grew-en; meaning: green, ecologist] an indy company run by a small group of snowboarders and skateboarders. They are a new eco-ethical board wear company doing way more than the majority of companies to ensure their products are 100% eco friendly and ethically produced. Grün takes the raw garments then prints them by hand using water based inks. Likewise they used organic hand loomed cotton for clothing labels, and even the hang tags are made from re-purposed cardboard. The extent of what they do to remain truly eco-ethical is far in excess of the half measures employed by the rest of the market. Below is a detailed look into Grün’s environmentally aware practices and eco credentials.
100% ORGANIC PRODUCTS
100% organic product, produced under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and certified by Control Union and The Soil Association. The certification encompasses the farming, production and distribution, ensuring full traceability of every product. Grün's Earth-Positive based range is free from genetically modified organisms.

FAIR TRADE PRACTICES
Under the organic standard, farmers and agricultural workers are protected by stringent social criteria, total traceability across the entire supply chain, and also by the ban on the use of poisonous chemicals that can severely damage the health of farmers and their families. These standards also free poor farmers from third world debt to chemical companies on the ‘pesticide treadmill’.

JUSTICE FOR WORKERS
To help tackle the social injustice often seen in manufacturing, commonly known as sweatshop labour, Grün goes further, making transparent the manufacturing supply chain through an independent audit by the Fair Wear Foundation, which
promotes fair labour conditions in the clothing industry.

LOW CARBON
Made in manufacturing facilities in India powered by wind turbines, from low-impact organic cotton, and is distributed through carbon neutral warehouses and offices in that use only renewable green electricity.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Certified by the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard, Class I. The Oeko-Tex Standard is a guarantee of the safety of textiles and dyestuffs to human health and to the environment. It also means we take more care in adopting environmentally friendly production methods throughout the manufacturing process.

LOOK AFTER OUR WATER
The processing of the dye effluent takes place in a controlled closed-loop purification system that uses treatment ponds, sand filtration and reversed osmosis to convert the waste water into clean water.

LOW WATER FOOTPRINT
It can take more than 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton, equivalent to a single T-shirt and a pair of jeans. That’s why we chose to work in a region that receives up to 95% of its water from the monsoon rain. This was an important consideration for us, as the monsoon rain reduces the need for large-scale irrigation projects normally associated with conventional cotton farming, which often deprive local villages of scarce water resources by draining lakes and rivers.

PICK YOUR COTTON CAREFULLY
We guarantee that we do not use cotton from Uzbekistan while the use of forced child labour is endemic. This follows the recommendations of the Environmental Justice Foundation's ‘Clean Cotton Campaign’. The complete traceability of certified organic cotton allows us to make this guarantee.

TRANSPORTATION
‘No Airfreight’ policy. We use containerized ocean shipping, thus the carbon footprint generated by transporting our apparel to Europe, Japan and the USA is negligible, more like a fingerprint, less than 1% of the total. We cannot solve the world’s transportation and energy security issues, but we can ensure that our own methods do nothing to contribute to environmental damage, social injustice or climate change.

HAND FINISHED
Finally we hand print all our tees using non-toxic, non-hazardous, water based eco inks. This means that any spillage can simply washed away, and misprints can easily be remedied without wastage.

Just as importantly it means our gear doesn't pump synthetics into the environment. The ink becomes part of the fabric as opposed to sitting on top of the fabric. The benefit of this is that water based inks will not crack or peel off over time as with PVC based inks that have a raised and rubbery or plastic feel to them.

Patagonia’s “The Footprint Chronicles”

Patagonia's “The Footprint Chronicles” is a website and short video series centered on the idea that Patagonia customers want to know the details of where their products come from. In other words, Patagonia is inviting the public to come with them as they assess and improve their own supply chain in China and all countries where they operate, demonstrating a level of transparency that few companies have ever approached. As such, it presents an opportunity not only to improve Patagonia’s own operations by opening them up to public scrutiny, but it can inform a more nuanced public discourse that will encourage greater transparency among other global corporations.

Patagonia’s initiative is particularly impressive because it endeavours to be transparent about both the social/labor and environmental impacts of the work the company does. While many companies are, of course, implementing transparency initiatives, Patagonia’s project is more or less unprecedented, because of the size of the company as well as the fact that it originated from customer demand. Customers of Patagonia, which produces high-end sports and outdoor apparel, were concerned about where their sweaters and wetsuits were coming from, and “what was being done in our name?” Patagonia’s approach is innovative and quite encouraging, and they have the ambitious goal of becoming the first notable company to be “regenerative”, to essentially give back more than it takes in terms of natural capital. Overconsumption is the problem, the people at Patagonia say, and by making their supply chain – their fabric materials, factories, transportation, and retail outlets – fully transparent, they are pioneering a new way of doing business. Let’s hope that more companies see the benefits of the “Footprint Chronicles” and follow suit.
