Vans “Pass The Bucket” Series To Feature Amy Purdy

Vans will premiere a new series on its offthewall.tv network called “Pass the Bucket,” which will feature a look at what action sports athletes, musicians, artists and foundations are doing to give back to their communities. The first episode, which is available to watch now at offthewall.tv,  will focus on Amy Purdy, an action sports athlete and founder of Adaptive Action Sports, an organization that helps amputees get involved with action sports. Purdy, who had both legs amputated at age 19, is working to get adaptive snowboarding included in the 2014 Olympics. Here is the official press release from Vans:

In church, a passed basket collects money to keep the building lights on.

In alcoholics anonymous, a can is passed collecting money to keep the coffee fresh.
A musician passes a hat keeping his passion alive.
A homeless man holds a cup hoping for handouts to survive.

Each container is filled due to the compassion and generosity of others.
Today, more than ever there is a need for people to become aware of the issues at hand and pro-actively fight for change. The opportunities to be selfless and contribute are endless and the large bucket is passed to you.
Vans is very proud to introduce our new series premiering this week on offthewall.tv, Pass the Bucket, a look into the humanitarian side of today’s most celebrated action sport athletes, musicians, artists and foundations.  Pass the Bucket presents a raw and transparent conversation of today’s shocking realities and potential solutions.
Pass the Bucket, Episode 1:  Amy Purdy
Amy Purdy is a snowboarder, skateboarder, makeup artist, actress, model and also a double leg amputee.  At 19, she contracted Neisseria Meningitis, a form of bacterial meningitis.  The disease affected her circulatory system resulting in the need to amputate both of her legs below the knee.  Her spleen and a kidney had to be removed as well. Two years later, she received a kidney transplant from her father. Her friends now refer to her as “Lucky.”
Amy’s most significant accomplishment to date is in the creation and development of the action sport athletic organization Adaptive Action Sports. In 2005, Amy and her partner Daniel Gale founded the non-profit organization to help adaptive athletes get involved with action sports, art and music. As of 2011, Amy is currently ranked #1 in the world for Adaptive Snowboarding and recently got adaptive sports into 2011 Winter X Games.  Amy’s goal is 2014 Olympic inclusion of Adaptive Snowboarding.

VF Corp Commended For Climate Change Disclosure

VF Corp–parent company of The North Face, Reef and Vans–has received a nod from the Carbon Disclosure Project for its approach to climate change disclosure.

VF announced today that the Carbon Disclosure Project, a non-profit organization that holds the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world and represents more than 500 institutional investors, has featured VF in its “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.”

The index, a component of the CDP’s annual S&P 500 Report, comprises 53 constituents of the report that have demonstrated a professional approach to climate change disclosure.

Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project, described the implications of a company’s inclusion in the index in a VF press release.

“The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index recognizes companies that demonstrate good internal data management practices for understanding greenhouse gas emissions, including energy use,” he said. “Companies that make this index have also demonstrated clear consideration of how climate change is and will impact their business. As companies’ understanding of climate change issues grows, they are better placed to take positive action to manage and mitigate its risks.”

Eric C. Wiseman, president and chief executive officer of VF has released this statement:

“We are grateful that in this, our first year of measuring our GHG globally, our efforts have been positively acknowledged. We recognize our responsibility to help manage the earth’s resources to benefit future generations and are committed to minimizing our environmental impact.”

Vans & POW Eco-Friendly Boots

Climate change is a major threat to our planet and to the future of snowboarding. In an effort to promote awareness of the issue, Vans has partnered with Protect Our Winters (POW), an organization dedicated to helping reverse the global warming crisis threatening winter sports, on a special snowboard boot project for the 2009-10 snow season.

Partnering with POW, Vans re-constructed it's top of the line men's Cirro and women's Veil snowboard boots with eco-friendly materials including 100% recycled PET textile, 50% recycled PET synthetic and non-toxic water-based solvents. The boots also feature Vans' custom designed BOA" focus system, offering riders unprecedented tech and performance in an exceptional, eco-friendly package.

"We're proud to be such an integral part of this project with Vans - they've really taken it to the next level by looking internally and taking the necessary steps to fight climate change by changing their design and manufacturing processes," said POW's Founder Jeremy Jones. "It's exciting and we hope it influences the rest of the industry".

Available in early fall 2009, the Vans x POW snowboard boots will be sold at board shops worldwide.

A portion of proceeds from the collaboration will go to POW, helping to fund programs and educate the consumer toward achieving one goal we all share – protecting our winters.
