Heavenly Fined $120K for Environmental Violations That Threaten Lake Tahoe

Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe has been fined $120,000 by California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for violating the state’s hazardous waste laws.
The fine: $94,000 in penalties and $26,000 in administrative costs
In September 2010 a compliance inspection found
  1. A lack of controls to prevent spillage and overflow of a used oil tank
  2. Failure to have a tank holding used oil assessed and inspected
  3. Failure to provide ongoing training to the emergency coordinator managing hazardous waste
  4. Failure to maintain secondary containment for the used oil tank
  5. Failure to provide secondary containment to pipes connected to the tank.
More on this Story from firsttracksonline.com
“Compliance with the Hazardous Waste Control is vital to protecting the environment close to Lake Tahoe,” Paul Kewin, assistant deputy director of the DTSC’s Enforcement and Emergency Response program, said in a press release issued on Wednesday. “The settlement signifies the department’s continuing efforts to uphold both environment safety and compliance with existing law.”
The violations resulted in a lawsuit filed in Sacramento County Superior Court by the DTSC against Heavenly, which was resolved by the $120,000 settlement that was approved by Judge David I. Brown on February 27, 2013. Department officials indicate that Heavenly recently paid the fine.

ZIMRIDE ANNOUNCES NEW PUBLIC ROUTE TO LAKE TAHOE

Innovative Social Transportation Company Pays for 500 Road Trips to Tahoe with Free Gas

San Francisco, CA – November 16, 2011— Zimride, the largest online ride-sharing service in North America, today announced that a new route between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe will open to the public beginning Thanksgiving day, bringing Bay Area residents convenient, inexpensive access to one of the country’s top winter destinations. To celebrate the route’s launch, Zimride is giving away $20,000 worth of free gas to riders on the route.

Zimride will give a free tank of gas ($40 value) to the first 500 drivers who successfully book a ride along the Tahoe route, through the end of the year. On average, it will pay for a roundtrip drive between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe!

Zimride allows drivers to sell the empty seats in their car to passengers who need a ride along popular routes, like San Francisco to Tahoe. As part of their mission, the company not only facilitates monetary transactions, but connects individuals, many of whom list the personal connections they’ve made as a key benefit of the service.

“We’ve been looking forward to opening the Lake Tahoe route all Fall, because we know it will be a popular destination for our Bay Area users—from college students to weekend travelers, skiers to snowboarders,” says Logan Green, co-founder and CEO of Zimride.  “Tahoe has over 3 million visitors every year, and over 20% of the people headed to the South Shore come from the Bay Area[1]. Even more important, nearly 80% of North Shore visitors arrive by car[2]. So that’s a lot of potential for Zimriders to save money and gas, while making friends. And even better, we’re paying for their drive! ”

To support the Lake Tahoe route, Zimride has also partnered with several top resorts in the area including Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Sierra at Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA and Sugar Bowl, as well as several others. Added incentives for riders who Zimride to the resorts include promotions such as free and discounted lift tickets, VIP parking, and other giveaways.

Zimride is already a key resource on many university and corporate campuses across 30 states in the US. Recently, expanding on their growing success in the college and corporate market, Zimride launched their first public route, San Francisco to Los Angeles, in August.

For the drive between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, Zimride is suggesting a $25 price per seat, each way. Drivers selling their empty seats, however, can name their own price.

Since launch, Zimride, which aims to transform transportation infrastructure by integrating social networks and ride sharing, has facilitated more than 26,000 carpools, helped users travel over 100 million miles and created over $50 million worth of savings in vehicle operating expenses.

Key to Zimride’s success is the combination of social and accessibility; Zimride users connect via Facebook, which adds a layer of trust to the system.  Before a rider accepts a seat in a car or a driver accepts a passenger, he or she can view the person’s profile information to ensure he or she is comfortable with the match.

Shreddy Times Snowboard Video "The Breakdown"

Our friends at the Tahoe based Shreddy Times need your help to fund a new kind of snowboard movie this season. Let's help them out!

Shreddy Times (ST) is a dynamic video production company based in North Lake Tahoe, California. This season the ST crew will be taking a new approach to snowboard movie production. The crew will use the Internet to distribute a “behind the scenes” video series which follows the riders all season long. The series will take our fans on an adventure through the lives of professional snowboarders as they work on an end of the season video called “The Breakdown.”
A “behind the scenes” before-the-release approach has never been done before in the snowboard industry. Viewers of our project will be able to follow us on a daily basis to find out where we are and what we are up to.
We will be releasing a minimum of 6 videos per month for 6 months as well as "The Breakdown." Our backers will be updated every week as to what we are doing and how things are going. These updates will come through ShreddyTimes.com, Twitter and Facebook.
The money we are searching for simply covers the costs to make the the season happen fluidly. We need to buy cameras, a boom, tapes, gas, data storage, and a laptop. If we cover our expenses, then we will be able to execute the project in Lake Tahoe. Our hope is that potential backers might find it fun to take trips with our group or come live with us. The more funding we get for the project the more fun we will have (The better the video will be).
*** ALL OVER FUNDING only makes our project better. That is why we have some of these ridiculous options for 3, 4 and 10k. If we fell into that kind of money that is exactly what we would want to do with it to provide our viewers more entertainment. The $6225 will simply make the project here in Lake Tahoe possible.
Shreddy Times is by no means a big operation. To date, we have had zero funding and zero help from anyone. We are now at the point in our careers where we need to buy the right equipment; and we want the ability to spend money on travel and expenses that the different projects require. We really need your help to get to the next level!
To see some of the videos that we have already made, or to check out our following, go to any of the following places:

If you have any questions at all about any of our backing opportunities please contact us:
Conor Toumarkine 603-496-6621 production@shreddytimes.com
Danny Toumarkine 603-662-6565 danny@shreddytimes.com

Thank you very much for taking interest in our project.
