DENVER - Nearly 300 people turned out in Denver and San Francisco to support youth outdoor nonprofit SOS Outreach through the annual Design the Modern Board contest, raising a combined $3,100 for the charity.
The contest, sponsored by indoor design company Design Within Reach, challenged participants to enter original designs for their dream snowboard. At Design Within Reach’s Denver location, the 16 entries were voted on by the crowd at on March 29. The winner, Mike Lorenzo, won a custom Never Summer snowboard with his winning design. The second and third place winners, AJ McCormick and Taylor Boone, received top sheets of their board designs. The party raised nearly $2,000 for SOS Outreach. This is the fifth annual contest held in Denver, and the first annual event in San Francisco.
At the San Francisco contest on April 7, 26 entries were submitted, and the winner was Derick Noffsinger, who has won the contest three times previously in Denver. Marc Alcock took second and Bo Lu took third. The party raised $1,100 for SOS.
“In our inaugural year having the Design the Modern Board event in San Francisco, we had an enormous amount of support from the local Bay-area community,” said SOS Lake Tahoe Program Manager Justin Behravesh. “Both artists and supporters of SOS came out to the event, and everyone had a great time.Much thanks to the Design Within Reach studio and all of our sponsors for making this possible.”
The events were also sponsored by Never Summer, Red Bull and Pabst Blue Ribbon, which provided prizes, drinks and music at the venues. Local businesses provided food and raffle gear for the parties, including Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and Satellite Board Shop in Denver and Deli Board, Pladra and the SFO snowboard shop in San Francisco.
SOS is an organization that aims to inspire underserved youth to make positive decisions through adventure sports such as snowboarding, skiing, wilderness trips and rock climbing.
