Andy Irons Passes Away, Cause Under Investigation

Andy Irons, 32, has been found dead in a Dallas hotel room due to dengue fever. Irons was on his way home from the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, which he withdrew from due to illness, reportedly dengue fever, which he acquired in either Portugal or Puerto Rico. However, an investigation is underway as to the cause of the three-time world champions death after methadone was found in his hotel room.

According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed methadone was found in a drug container beside his hotel bed. Methadone is commonly used to treat heroin addiction.

According to reports, Andy was so sick he was unable to board his flight from Dallas to Kauai, got a hotel room, and was found there dead, after failing to respond to a wake-up call, leaving behind an eight-month pregnant wife, family, and world full of friends and fans.

Our deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of Andy. This is a terribly sad day for the family and friends of AI and the surfing community at large.

Following the discovery of his body, the  Association of Surfing Professionals following statement:

“The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii’s Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion. At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support, and asks that the community respect its privacy.”
