Danny Davis & Kevin Pearce Update

Snowboarder Danny Davis is recovering after successful back surgery he needed after a season-ending accident on a four-wheeler in the Utah mountains.

An update posted on his Facebook site Tuesday said doctors are "very pleased" with the outcome of Davis' surgery on a vertebra in his lower back. The update said an official statement from the doctors would be coming in the next 24 hours.

Davis is good friends with Kevin Pearce, another top snowboarder and one-time Olympic hopeful who is set to be transferred out of critical care at University of Utah hospital, a positive sign in his recovery from a severe head injury.

An update provided by his family Monday said Pearce, injured when he hit his head on the halfpipe during practice on Dec. 31 in Park City, would move from critical care to the Neuro Acute Care unit.

The update said Pearce is making steady progress and that, quote, "his sense of humor and optimism are apparent as he begins his rehabilitation."

Venture Storm Splitboard

Developed in conjunction with Silverton Mountain and tested in Colorado's rugged San Juan Mountains, the Venture Storm Splitboard craves big lines and burly terrain. It's chatter proof when bombing open steeps, but agile enough to navigate tight trees and narrow chutes without flinching. • Reverse camber for superb pow flotation
  • Stiffer mid-section and tail for greater stability and control
  • Flat section between bindings for control in chop and on hardpack
  • Full poplar and ash core for lightweight durability

Makboard - 100% Recycled Snowboards

Designed to carve, slash, and surf the mountain, the Makboard looks and rides unlike any other snowboard on the market today – and it’s 100 percent recyclable.

Lake Tahoe rider and inventor Bob Candler was turned off by the waste created when a snowboard reaches the end of its useable lifespan. He spent 15 years tinkering in his garage, perfecting a revolutionary snowboard made entirely of Makrolon — a clear polycarbonate material that is 100 percent recyclable. Now, the Makboard solves the problem of what to do with old, played-out snowboards.

"Taking care of our planet is something that should be important to all riders," Candler said. "I created a board that, instead of ending up in a landfill, is melted down and reshaped into another snowboard when its life is over."

Since Makboards are manufactured in the USA, recycling an old Makboard is as simple as sending it back to the company with a pre-paid shipping label. And snowboarders who do choose to recycle their old Makboards will be given a credit toward the purchase of a new Makboard.

"Ultimately, what we're trying to do is keep these things from ending up as pollution," Candler said. "As snowboarders, we've got to be on the front lines doing all we can to protect what we all love — the mountains, the environment, and everything that makes snowboarding so much fun."

Makboards are now available through select snowboard retailers nationwide, as well as directly to consumers through the Makboard Web site, Makboard.com.

Danny Davis to miss Olympic Games after accident

If Kevin Pearce wasn't going to be able to take on icon Shaun White, well, then, his close friend and snowboarding colleague Danny Davis planned on shouldering the assignment.

Now, Davis, like Pearce, won't be competing at the Winter Olympics next month in Vancouver. Like Pearce, Davis is injured and also in a hospital in Utah.

Davis was scheduled to have surgery Monday night to repair his fractured vertebrae, having suffered the injury in a non-snowboarding accident early Sunday morning. He will miss the rest of the 2010 season, according to his Facebook page.

The 21-year-old who grew up in Michigan was involved in an ATV accident, according to the Park Record (Utah), which said he and a friend were going down a driveway when they hit a closed gate. News reports indicated he was found unconscious.

Mike Jankowski, the U.S. snowboarding head halfpipe coach, declined to comment when reached by phone Monday, referring questions to a Davis representative.

"Doctors remain positive Danny will make a full recovery," said an update on the Danny Davis Pro Snowboarder Facebook page.

This accident happened less than two weeks after Davis upset White at an Olympic qualifying event in Mammoth, pulling off a record-setting halfpipe run. Davis landed an unprecedented three double corks.

Davis stood in the finish area holding a sign, saying: "Pearce Be With You."

"It was more just difficult not to have him [Pearce] out there riding with us," Davis said in an interview with The Times minutes after the win at Mammoth. "I know he wants us to just get back to our thing. And he'd be [upset] if we sat on the couch and we were like, 'I can't snowboard anymore. I feel [bad] about it.' He'd want us out there doing our things."

Pearce had been one of the few snowboarders to beat White in head-to-head competition. Pearce suffered a serious head injury Dec. 31 in Park City, Utah, in training, attempting to land a double cork.

About two weeks ago, Pearce was upgraded from critical to serious condition, and has been responding to therapy, according to his brothers.

Pearce, along with Davis, had been heavily favored to make the Olympic team. The remaining two Olympic qualifying events are Friday and Saturday, both at Park City.

FRS Healthy Energy

FRS is a new kind of supplement for health and energy. Typical energy supplements and energy drinks rely on high doses of caffeine, Guarana, Taurine, and sugar to boost energy, and may add vitamins for health. FRS is different. At the core of the patented FRS formula is an antioxidant called Quercetin. Not only does Quercetin support the immune system like other antioxidants, but it’s clinically proven to boost energy. In fact Quercetin is the only antioxidant clinically proven to boost energy. When taken regularly people report increased and sustained energy without the jitteriness of caffeine or other stimulants. Quercetin energy feels different than stimulant energy because Quercetin energy works in a completely different way.

Salomon Grip Snowboard

The 2010 Salomon Grip, is an eco-conscious twin-tip freestyle deck created from the minds of Austria's Wolfgang Nyvelt and the Salomon crew. Its RLNK (ridiculously long nose kick) tips are generously elongated for powder float and presses without sacrificing its traditional camber's snap, stability, and rebound. The Grip also features kinked Equalizer edges, which clamp to any snow surface without impeding smooth arcing turns.

The reason we like this board is its part of Salomon's G.I.F.T. (Green Initiative For Tomorrow) program. The Grip boats an Aspen Strong core combined with an ABC Wrapper which uses structural sustainable bamboo veneers to reduce its fiberglass, plastic, and resin content by 25%. Keep you eyes out for Wolle's signature Grip that'll be produced with layers of bamboo and glue making it free of plastics, fully recyclable, and hopefully the shape of things to come.

Arbor A-Frame Snowboard

Arbor’s A-Frame is a big-mountain gun for riders who want the highest level of on-edge performance; this directional machine is designed to lock and hold a deeply carved line, provide tight control in the steeps, and deliver stability at higher speeds. An inlaid, structural wood top designed by artist Cody Gewertz pays respect to snowboarding’s surf roots.

Protecting the planet is about the environments we utilize everyday. We need clean air to skate, clean water to surf, and snow to ride. This is why Arbor incorporates the following specs:

STRUCTURAL WOOD TOPSHEET - Works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass - during construction resin locks the dense wood fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board, providing added return and durability, while allowing for important weight reduction.

FSC CERTIFIED WOOD CORES - All of Arbor’s wood cores are made with poplar that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as sustainably produced. Poplar is still the best choice as a primary wood core material due to its combination of lighter-weight performance, durability, and availability.

PAULOWNIA WEIGHT REDUCTION - Paulownia is a fast growing, plantation-cultivated wood species that we use as an ultra-lightweight, balsa-like core additive. Unlike balsa, Paulownia’s tensile strength is similar to traditional wood core materials, which allows us to deliver maximum weight reduction, without reducing durability

Kevin Pearce's condition improving, upgraded from critical to serious condition

Snowboarder Kevin Pearce has been upgraded from critical to serious condition, according to his doctors at the University of Utah hospital. Although Pearce still faces a long recovery, this is a very big step and his doctors are "cautiously" optimistic, given his current progress.

Pearce had been training in the halfpipe at Park City, Utah, for this week's Olympics qualifier at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, and was knocked unconscious when he caught his toe-side edge while landing a cab double cork -- a twisting double back flip maneuver he's landed before.

One of Pearce's doctors, Holly Ledyard, a neurointensivist (a physician with specialized education and training in critical neurological conditions), remains positive about his condition.

“Kevin is in serious condition and remains in intensive care. We’ve been able to remove his breathing tube, and he is slowly regaining consciousness and able to follow commands," Ledyard said in an update posted on the Facebook Fan page that Pearce's family created for fans who want to offer wishes and support.

"While we’re pleased that he’s improving faster than anticipated, he still has a long recovery ahead of him,” added Ledyard.

Close friend Danny Davis must have been channeling Pearce, Pete Thomas reports on his blog. Davis landed a monumental second run that included three double corks to best fellow competitor Shaun White and take the top spot in the halfpipe competition Wednesday at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. It was the first time Davis had ever landed three double corks in one run.

"I had Kev on my mind and right before every run I was making sure I had him in spirit. I know we're sending vibes back to each other and it was good," Davis said. "I asked Kev to help me through that one. He's not up, but we're mentally on the same wavelength now. He's helped me through my runs and it's been nice to have him."

Spark R&D Develops POW-Branded Splitboard Binding

Spark R&D has created a Protect Our Winters branded version of their Binding for 2010. Beyond making the best splitboard bindings in the industry and promoting human-powered riding, Spark has done some smart things in terms of sustainability throughout their operations, especially in their product life cycle management.

For example, their earlier version of bindings were a sandwich of aluminum and UHWM polyethylene plastic held together by rivets. Deconstructing these bindings at the end of their useful life would be difficult and costly, and UHMW isn't commonly taken for recycling.

The new baseplates are machined from a solid billet of aluminum and in a matter of minutes, the binding could be taken apart and recycled with any other aluminum scrap. Also, the aluminum chips generated during machining are taken to a recycling center. This approach to manufacturing is essentially scrap free.

A percentage of these binding sales will be donated to POW to aid in their cause.

For more information about the bindings, visit sparkrandd.com.
