Wolle Nyvelt's Dakine Bronco Glove

The 2010 Wolle Nyvelt’s pro model Dakine Bronco gloves will be chalked full of sustainable materials since Dakine is making a big effort to be more environmentally aware. They have started to make changes in their product lines such as using vegetable oil inks, recycled paper hang tags, controlled forestry papers, electronic catalogs, and more.

You can win a pair of these gloves at by writing a one-paragraph article describing what you would do to make changes in our industry to “go green” and emailing your paragraph to contest@dakine.com with sizes, and an address for us to ship out some of these amazing Bronco gloves.  After all, if we don’t take care of the world we love, we may not be shredding fresh powder for much longer!

Vans & POW Eco-Friendly Boots

Climate change is a major threat to our planet and to the future of snowboarding. In an effort to promote awareness of the issue, Vans has partnered with Protect Our Winters (POW), an organization dedicated to helping reverse the global warming crisis threatening winter sports, on a special snowboard boot project for the 2009-10 snow season.

Partnering with POW, Vans re-constructed it's top of the line men's Cirro and women's Veil snowboard boots with eco-friendly materials including 100% recycled PET textile, 50% recycled PET synthetic and non-toxic water-based solvents. The boots also feature Vans' custom designed BOA" focus system, offering riders unprecedented tech and performance in an exceptional, eco-friendly package.

"We're proud to be such an integral part of this project with Vans - they've really taken it to the next level by looking internally and taking the necessary steps to fight climate change by changing their design and manufacturing processes," said POW's Founder Jeremy Jones. "It's exciting and we hope it influences the rest of the industry".

Available in early fall 2009, the Vans x POW snowboard boots will be sold at board shops worldwide.

A portion of proceeds from the collaboration will go to POW, helping to fund programs and educate the consumer toward achieving one goal we all share – protecting our winters.

Holden Dischord Jacket

The Holden Dischord Snowboard Jacket may be the most sustainable snowboard jacket on the planet.  Holden uses a hemp-fiber fabric to give this jacket total waterproof breathable protection without the environmental harm caused by polyester-based or nylon fabrics. This Holden jacket also includes their cocona (coconut shell based) liner with excellent evaporative cooling, odor absorption, antimicrobial, and UV protective qualities for increased next-to-skin comfort. Holden’s new 3 layer fabric features the award winning c-change laminate (used by BMW’s technical motorcycle wear), a bluesign certified Schoeller technology, meaning it’s made with certified eco-friendly processes and meets strict environmental standards of commitment.  This jacket contains a fluorocarbon-free 80/20 DWR coating which drastically cuts down on harmful emissions emitted by traditional DWR applications. Holden also packages all products in fully biodegradable acetate ethylene bags which take a mere six years to decompose (even w/o sunlight)! Check out this super sustainable jacket at holden.com!

Arbor Snowboards

Arbor sports has been manufacturing skateboards, snowboards, and apparel using environmentally friendly methods since 1995. They have the largest offering of environmentally friendly snowboards of any manufacturer. They use a natural bamboo veneer as a top-sheet material, and a mixture of hard bamboo, poplar, and paulonia for their cores all of which are accessed from suppliers who produce their wood products sustainably. Paulonia is an exceptionally renewable material due to its fast growth. It is also very light weight yet provides the same tensile strength as poplar or aspen. K2 "O" Snowboard

This year, K2 Snowboards have made great efforts to minimize their material consumption and to contain their waste stream. They've introduced HybriLight Construction which makes their new "0" lighter and stronger than most other snowboards and supposedly reduces emissions of C02, Sox, Nox, and particulates by 67% - 90%.  HybriLight Construction is said to completely eliminate the usage of ABS plastic, and produce a fiberglass that is 35% stronger thus requiring less construction materials. In addition, K2 claims to have eliminated 85% of plastic packaging material, 94% of ink and solvents, the need for a UV coating, and produced the wood cores from sustainably harvested Aspen and Bamboo which regrows from existing root systems after cutting thereby mitigating soil erosion in their ecosystems. Besides revamping their manufacturing process so winter lives on K2 will purchase pollution offset credits for every “O” snowboard manufactured.  These credits ensure that purchasing this snowboard will not contribute to the deteriorating environment.
